Commanders worth brewing (kamigawa neon dynasty)

Commander (EDH) forum

As we know not every commander can give you that must brew feeling. We've gotten a lot of new commanders this year and the disparity in popularity is staggering.

Basically, I thought it'd be cool to start a thread for the upcoming set and discuss how brew-able the new legendaries will be and how often do you expect to see them either helming the deck or in the 99.

Give a power rating, popularity rating and maybe a small blurb about why you feel that way.

Atsushi, the Blazing Sky - 3/5 in power and likely popularity too; I don't expect to see this dragon as a commander too often. 4/4 for 4 with flying and trample and it has 2 solid death triggers and can go infinite with Ashnod's Altar and Nim Deathmantle but it's still highly telegraphed and mana intensive. There are much better win from the command zone commanders in red and I don't see this dragon taking their spot.

Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaos - demon slayer secret lair confirmed?! Jk. Theres a lot going on here though it's not particularly game breaking it is interesting. 4/4 for 4 with a sac outlet that doubles as a means to set up your top deck and smack a player for a lot of damage. His abilities feed into each other and opens up an interesting design space. Probably a 2.5/5 power wise and a 3.5/5 popularity wise; he's a returning character and looks really cool - also he's going to have a lot of alternate arts.

I suppose it's only fair to mention that Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaos can technically win from the command zone with infinite mana, a haste enabler, and a reshuffle effect. It could be another flavor of a Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead combo deck but it would likely have too many moving parts to be viable at most tables. Also, an untap effect like Umbral Mantle and unlimited mana + either a reshuffle effect or enough cmc to kill table would be a win too.

The downside to this is that Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaos wouldn't be doing any of the heavy lifting and would likely get stale quickly.

Seems early to make this thread doesn't it? But hidetsugu seems like a blast. It'll be a mana hungry deck but you just play more ramp

shadow63 - I'm posting as they come out because doing them all at once would be a total burnout for me. Also, he'll definitely offer a lot of utility and will just dominate in limited. I'm hoping he won't just get over shadowed by the pre-cons/chase legends in the set. However, he falls under that more fair/niche deck building style.

[Satoru Umezawa] - at first glance I was just going to say only in the 99 of Yuriko. However, this guy is actually value city furniture level of value. Once each turn when you ninjutsu you get to Anticipate and it gives all creatures in your hand ninjutsu - I can see this almost being modern playable with is basically being able to cheat out any fatty. 4/5 power wise but will probably still fall short of Yuriko popularity wise; much like the vampires from Crimson Vow not being able to even compete with Edgar.

I love this so much. It's like having Quicksilver Amulet

griffstick - I think it slots in so nicely into the 99 of pivot yuriko (cedh lost on the database) and in Anowon. Also, probably makes a sweat mid-high power deck that will scale over time if they print more busted cards like Blightsteel Colossus

I think tokens are the way to go. Trading tokens for big stuff. Think the Myriad mechanic. Blade of Selves, Banshee of the Dread Choir, and Broodbirth Viper. Other cards like Bitterblossom, and Thopter Spy Network, trad these cards in for the biggest nastiest creatures.

These are good for starters to choose from for cheating in value.

Also dimir has all the evasion. Cards like Dauthi Voidwalker, Lifebane Zombie, and Shadowmage Infiltrator to cards like Levitation, plus many more.

Bring on the haste/shadow/unblockable 1/1s. I'm a fan of cheating things into play so this is going to get very out of hand. Bring on Scion of Darkness. Maybe my dream of being able to play Leviathan in a deck can finally come true...or do you still have to sac the 2 islands?

griffstick - I have a strong feeling he'll be in Polymorph style decks and perhaps Animar but aside from that running him as the commander will just draw a target on your back even at 7 mana lol
