Commander (EDH) forum

Hi, all! My store (probably the ONLY store who hasn't gotten any Commander decks), is trying to do a bunch of Commander. So, since I've been playing Magic this year, I was told about how this game works. I'm so glad my mom brought back all my OLD cards!

NOW I WANNA PLAY Commander!!! PLEASE, what is the new decks, Commanders, and which is easiest? Also, anybody could please give me their suggestion on a Commander. I don't care if it's hard or expensive. I just want any idea for me to browse, and contemplate.

Thanks MTG peeps!

Well, the best way (in my opinion) to start a deck is a find a Legendary creature with colors you like, and an ability you think you could form a deck around. EDH is random at heart, with so much variety in the cards, but you always have the commander. So, pick your favorite awesome Legend and start. Liking the theme and play of the deck, which is often based off the commander makes it the fun format it is to me.

Personally, I suggest trying out Uril, the Miststalker . A 3-color deck, especially a Shard deck (in this case Naya), is very manageable in EDH. Also, many of the Auras you will want to put in the deck are cheap and easy-to-find.

It's a great place to start. However, it is my second EDH build. My first was a Sliver deck built around Sliver Overlord .

It all comes down to what you like. If you have a favorite color or combination of colors, go to http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Default.aspx and do an advanced search for legendary creatures within that color setup. Find one which has abilities that you like and good synergy with other cards.

Thanks all! Yeah, Epochalyptik OMG! There are LITERALLY 478 possible Commanders! N the most EXPENSIVE to cast is Emrakul, the Aeons Torn , how can anybody possibly base a deck on that?

Also, I was wondering does anybody know HOW MANY lands, I should have, average. I don't care if it's a fast fetching land deck. I just want to know, ON AVERAGE, how many lands should I have in my deck. I can only have 100, so when it comes to building a REGULAR deck. The deck tutorial says on Magic The Gathering, like I forgot, it was 40% or 60%

I tend to run around 40 lands. Something like a Sliver deck wants to run 40-50 because it can tutor all the cards it wants/needs, but needs a spectrum mana base to get the engine started. Uril needs about 30-40 (I believe) to guarantee consistent playability on cards.

I tend to go somewhere between 33% and 42% when building a typical 60-card deck, depending on the curve and format. EDH you may want to go higher on if you don't have ramp. It depends on what you use as utility cards, how early in the game you can get yourself set up, general cost, mana curve, etc.

First of all, I recommend avoiding certain generals, such as the aforementioned Uril. When you have a general that people have difficulty interacting with it, they often decide it's simplest to kill you instead. Other examples include Sharuum, the Hegemon; Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind; and Arcum Dagsson. Fortunately, as you said earlier, there is a huge number of generals to choose from, so you have plenty of options for generals that are powerful and fun to build around. Many of the commanders from the new preconstructed decks are excellent, provided that you have the lands to support a wedge manabase.

Yeah, I do. They were SUPPOSED to have the Commander tourney (would've been 9 people) but, NOTHING came in store, no promo general, no commander decks (I honestly kinda would've wanted the R/U deck. :(

Hey, CharonSquared I was wondering. Since I can have 100 cards AND and it's SOOOOOOOO easy to destroy that card. Can I have 4 Nin, the Pain Artist in my deck? Can I even have another able Commander in my deck?

Norin the Wary is the easiest Commander to make, but Shock will def. Kill this guy. So I can I have 4 of those cards in my commander deck? Or can I have 4 of him AND 4 Ishi-Ishi, Akki Crackshot in my commander deck?

The first rule of EDH is that you can only have 1 copy of any card except for basic lands.

Also, Shock will not kill Norin the Wary because he will not be on the battlefield when it resolves.

Norin even exiles himself if he attacks, so he's really a fairly useless general, unless you want a guaranteed Proteus Staff trigger. But there are better choices.

Attacking for 2 general damage is fairly useless to begin with.

Horde of Notions is another good deck, along the lines of Scion of the Ur-Dragon . The color flexibility makes it a lot of fun because you aren't really limited at all as to what you can put in.

Ok, ok. So you can't have 2 of ANYTHING in your deck. Wow. D'oh. Bummers. Ouch. Whoa. Diablo (for my Upper West Side peeps!)

Not quite true, you can run any number of basic lands. So it's not quite a true highlander format.

Norin isn't completely useless. YOu have to build a deck around him though. Confusion in the Ranks , Pandemonium and Cloudstone Curio (with a bunch of enters/leaves play creatures) can make his popping in and out actually useful.
