Can we play that commander? We have that commander at home! Commander at home:

Commander (EDH) forum

Posted on Feb. 16, 2023, 12:12 p.m. by seshiro_of_the_orochi

To make it short: I was debating buying cards for a Tocasia, Dig Site Mentor EDH deck. Right before ordering, I realized Tocasia is basically Sidisi, Brood Tyrant in Bant with artifacts instead of zombies.

The result: I don't have to spend the money. And I'm building Sidisi I guess :)

The question: Do you know similar cases of "commander@home-syndrome"?

When Meria, Scholar of Antiquity was spoiled, I actually thought: we have Urza, Lord High Artificer at home now.

Forgive me, I’m an Old, but can someone explain to me the “at home” terminology..?

FormOverFunction I think it's just a running internet joke of, a bad version of a good thing that just isn't the same. Like, when a parent would say "we have cheerios at home" when what they actually bought was "honey flavored oat bites of various geometrical design."

FormOverFunction It's kinda large, but here's the idea (Anyone know how to get it smaller? I tried style="width:10px" but it didn't work.)

Ironically, I almost never play blue and I've never done an artifact based deck so I was going to get an urza lord high artificer and get to building........then I pulled a meria scholar of antiquities out of a pack while sitting at home. So now I'm building a much more comfortable green red artifact deck

plakjekaas: I like that one, and Yisan gave proof that it's perfectly correct :D

FormOverFunction: Niko9 explained the idea pretty fine. I think the basic idea stems from the logic parents or grandparents tend to use when a child wants to get something new or fancy, when it's just a fancier/worse/better/different version of the same old thing one does have in a box somewhere at home. Can't wait to do that myself one fine day :D

Delphen7: Great, you reminded me to put Kari Zev, Skyship Raider into my Kibo deck. Thanks!

Okay so that makes a lot of sense and I LOVE it. Thank you all, you danged whipper-snappers.

Ok, now that we have the rules clear, any more "commanders at home" you know of? ;)

Well, there's Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait, the face commander of one of the first standard set-accompanying precon commander decks, but we already had Tatyova, Benthic Druid at home already.

Haha, I thought about Aesi vs Tatyova, but I decided I wasn't pulling another 10 actual cards for lands so I didn't want to change.

Me: Can I please build Prosper?

Mom: But we already have Mighty Pavel at home! Infinite power puts you closer to winning than a bit of impulse draw!

Also:

Me: ...Then can I please build Chulane, Legendary Poet?

Mom: But we already have Tobias the Obviously Literate at home! Everyone prefers poetry that don't use alliteration as it's primary device!

Kidding obviously, but I'm not going to say there aren't games when changing things up is tempting, but most games I lose aren't because of the Commander so why worry about what isn't really the problem?

Is that Vadrik, Astral Archmage? He seems to have a lot of potential!

Don't, we have Vadrik at home.

Vadrik at home: Mizzix of the Izmagnus

Can we have Olivia Voldaren Olivia, Mobilized for War and Olivia, Crimson Bride.

Mom: Sweety, we have all three Olivia at home.

Olivia at home: Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief Drana, Liberator of Malakir and Drana, the Last Bloodchief.

For real though, it feels like every version of a Drana we got was followed soon by a version of Olivia that does a similar thing. The first Drana and Olivia leverage excess Mana as removal that doubles as a bump in power. The second versions are aggro strategies, and the third (and currently final versions) are reanimator cards. I play the first Drana, and am kinda annoyed att how similar they always seem to me.

plakjekaas: Great catch!

DaWubber: This is so irritating. I've never stumbled upon this oddity. Thanks for sharing!
