Hi, I want to build a deck around discarding, using; discard, madness and cycling, specifically using one of the two commanders listed above. However I need some advice and tips on how to win with a deck based on these mechanics. Any advice welcome!!

Chainer is the better build around for edh. The long name guy is better suited to modern - the ceiling of the card is very low in commander but they'll both play the same way if you optimize them loot, reanimate, rinse and repeat till you win or have too much value to handle.

Asmoran could have been a decent middle of the road commander if they'd have just made her Jund. As it is the amount of sources you can get food from is extremely limited, totaling 11 cards that say food in her colors. Including her...

If the idea is to play her as reanimation. Well you'll get her out, play your cookbook, get 2 or 3 uses maybe, it'll be blown up, and you'll never play her again. Using her as the commander is like not using a commander imo. Far too little support. Maybe if she could grab The Underworld Cookbook from the graveyard or library to hand.

Chainer is going to give your deck access to reanimation every time you play him. Asmoran gets the cookbook once in the entire game and is starving for food all the time.

If you’re looking to discard cards, and have any creatures to speak of, I would strongly recommend Murderer's Axe, as you can hot-potato it around until you’ve discarded everything you want to.

In my opinion, Anje Falkenrath would be the best commander for you in those colors for that. I may be a little biased though...they are a Vampire (best tribe in magic). Haha

Out of the two I would go with Chainer, Nightmare Adept if you want a deck that is somewhat reliable and can utilize the cmdr while also not having to focus on the cmdr.

On the other hand using the lunch lady as a cmdr really requires you build around her or she is pretty useless as you wont have food tokens to activate her ability. But with limited food token cards I think only The Underworld Cookbook actually cares about discard. I do think she can be a fun janky cmdr and have a Stuffy Doll deck planned for her.

For Chainer, Nightmare Adept, looting is your friend its sorta like having a limited second hand. Of course you can use his ability only once a turn so I think having a good amount of recursion like Apprentice Necromancer is good. Pair it with cards like Grim Haruspex you can refill your hand to discard more cards. So I would build it as a looting deck focused on recuring good stuff.

  1. Discard and cast Apprentice Necromancer using Chainer, Nightmare Adept’s ability.
  2. Sacrifice Apprentice Necromancer bring back a creature from your graveyard such as Archfiend of Despair swing and sacrifice it at your end step.
  3. With Grim Haruspex in play you will draw a card which you can discard to Chainer, Nightmare Adept to recast Apprentice Necromancer next turn.

Using madness cards can help you retain some more value as well.

Another fun thing you could do is target Phyrexian Delver with Apprentice Necromancer and you can recur another target creature permanently. Keep in mind you can do this on other people’s turns as well so with enough mana you could recur 3-4 creatures a round but keep in mind Phyrexian Delver does drain your life.

You can also utilize sac outlets if you do use nonpermanent recursion. So Viscera Seer, Altar of Dementia, Goblin Bombardment, etc.

Encore could also fit in Rakshasa Debaser.

Just try not to include too many different things or the deck becomes too janky. Tho we all love our jank.
