About Erebos and the Command Zone.

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic has a commander related Life Gain that is specified on the card. Also has an effect that whenever you can pay to draw a card.

My question is this. Are any of Erebos, God of the Dead abilities alive in the command zone?

After all, with Ageless it's in the command zone, why can't I pay and draw as well? Or have my friends been playing him wrong with the trigger considering it doesn't specify in the command zone?

Rules questions belong in the Q&A. I can't move this there, but I can move it to the EDH forum.

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic 's ability only triggers from the command zone because it says it does. Only its last ability functions from the command zone.

Unless otherwise specified, abilities of a permanent card function only while that card is a permanent (i.e. while it is on the battlefield).

@Epochalyptik Apologies. Still not bad, though telling my friend about Oloro, Ageless Ascetic and the card draw will make him sad. Do you have any specific links or rule area that applies so I may convince him when he argues his case with it in relation to Command Zone?

Still, Erebos, God of the Dead without command zone shenanigans seems really brutal to pull on a friend. Thank you!

The only special abilities as it were the command zone offers is simply quoted from the official EDH site and rules "While a Commander is in the command zone, it may be cast." Unless otherwise stated by the card, in which case Oloro has special text.

112.6. Abilities of an instant or sorcery spell usually function only while that object is on the stack. Abilities of all other objects usually function only while that object is on the battlefield. The exceptions are as follows:

It goes on to list the exceptions. I'm not going to list them all. You can look it up in the comp rules here. The specific exception that applies to Oloro, Ageless Ascetic 's last ability is:

112.6b An ability that states which zones it functions in functions only from those zones.

I actually have a question. Had your friend been gaining 4 life per turn with Oloro in the command zone? Why would you ever cast a commander that supports a lifegain play style if he was more useful in the command zone.
