Pauper EDH

Commander (EDH) forum

I'm looking to make a more competitive Pauper EDH deck. I decided on mono-Black Aristocrats strategy. I wanted to make something that would be viable in Pauper and at a normal table so I went with Keskit, the Flesh Sculptor as it's an uncommon legendary. What do you guys think? Anything fun you could think of?

I've played with Keskit before, and he was very difficult to work with. He required massive, repeatable board states to use effectively. The worst part was going through all that work, only to land on duds.

Almost requires huge board presence as well as topdeck manipulation, with a very honed deck. Likely tons of tutors so if you don't sac into your cards, you can sac into your tutors instead.

Like I said, he's difficult to run. Might be all that much harder in Pauper.

My first question would be, within your common card pool, what is your wincon with Keskit? Looking at your idea for a mono-black aristocrats strategy, why not something like Syr Konrad, the Grim instead? My own experience with pEDH, has been with a Fynn, the Fangbearer deck, and even with the basic strategy of infect, I actually found it harder to keep and support a board state in order to win with him since I'm missing a lot of uncommon/rare support cards.

That being said, if you're sticking with Keskit, I'd start by keeping a good amount of removal in the deck, a few more then you'd think you need as you won't have nearly as many boardwipes.

Also maybe look into creatures with things like unearth, escape, flashback, so that you get reuse whatever Keskit ends up putting into yard.

Good luck hope this helps

Unlife I was thinking of doing a Partner thing with Tormod, the Desecrator since Tormod could feed Keskit for draw in a re-animator styled deck. Using something like Ashnod's Altar and Falkenrath Noble to help drain the board.

I was also thinking of using Gray Merchant of Asphodel since it was printed at common rarity. Could be a good win con if I can fill my board.

Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker as the cmdr is your best option for a strong aristocrats pauper edh deck.

Must they be legendary? I thought pauper was any uncommon?

Pauper edh cmdr only has to be uncommon. It doesn't have to be legendary. But if you plan on playing it against regular edh decks then its only fair that you build a pauper edh deck using a legendary uncommon cmdr. But you could rule 0 your cmdr in there anyway

Eh if you're going for a competitive pauper edh deck simic and dimir are the way to go. An aristocrats build has a lot of moving parts and is very easy to interrupt and with this being pauper you won't have the same resilience you have in normal edh/cedh - the best commanders either create a form of card advantage or leverage a very consistent utility

Something like Ghost of Ramirez DePietro and Tormod, the Desecrator would provide you with a more solid base for a build. You can loot through your deck, get stuff back, build a board state, create fodder and best of all you can have a combo back up.

RNR_Gaming I was also considering swapping for Whisper, Blood Liturgist to help with the whole re-animation thing. I feel like it might be a better pick and helps to give more consistent wins through Gary and what not.

@junkygoatgiblets - the issue with that is in pedh the fodder just isn't there to support something like that in mono-black. Also, the power ceiling of what's worthwhile to reanimate is much lower. Now, I love Gary I even have a semi popular pedh brew up on here (sorry for the shameless plug) but taking out 3 other players is going take a lot of pips.

Now, I'm not saying don't brew or that you cannot make a fun interesting deck- just keep in mind that there are some fast decks and to account for them when brewing. Eventually there may be some down shifts or even new cards that make aristocrats more viable but it'll be an uphill battle as it stands now.

Yea I agree that dimir is probably the way to go here. Plus dimir has the most tutors. Including Brainspoil than can grab gary. Also blue has the two most broken cards in the format. Peregrine Drake and Rhystic Study both printed at common.

griffstick they actually banned Rhystic Study and Mystic Remora in pedh but i suppose if you're just playing normals with a pedh deck its probably fine.
