S.o.s Generals!!!

Commander Deck Help forum

I've been looking for a new deck for a few months now and today I was able to narrow it down to 3 Generals.

I just love these 3 generals and I need some help to pick one and maybe a few pointers on what kind of strategy I could use with it.

First one is Kozilek, the Great Distortion , obviously going to be Eldrazi tribal.

Second one is Niv-Mizzet Reborn , I just love the fact that every time you cast him you get free cards (and the art os to die for in my opinion) but I don't know who to use him (5 colors open so much possibilities).

And the last one is Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  Flip, again most of the things that picked my interest was the arts on the cards. Is mill the only path with him or is there something else i can use with him?

Kozilek is colorless control, Niv-Mizzet is Food Chain , and Nicol-Bolas is Midrange/Discard.

I did Bolas as Grixis zombies.

Steelspike do you have a list for that ? You think Bolas's Citadel and Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God would be good in the deck?

My Kozilek, the Great Distortion deck is my favorite "fair" EDH deck to play: play a whole bunch of ramp rocks then cast your Kozilek and draw 7! It's perfect for a playgroup that likes to make tuned decks but isn't cEDH.

Here's my somewhat out-of-date list; I've obviously added the new Ugin and Karn because they're affordable, and made some other tweaks. I would just use it as a starting point.

Between the three, I'd say the fairest general would be Kozilek, the Great Distortion , I would go with him. Although Eldrazi tribal is a viable option with him at the helm, I think you should take a look at another possible iteration of Eldrazi tribal with a Izzet general, Jhoira of the Ghitu , obviously without green (and land ramp, that is). If you're interested, take a look:

Cyberseb I don't at this moment.

I have a bad habit of building decks and then never uploading them here, unless they're a constant in my deck library.

I also have Animar and Atraxa decks that I haven't posted... I'll try and get the Bolas deck uploaded tomorrow and let you know when I do.

For some reason people keep telling me Kozilek would be a "fair" deck. Not sure what's the point of a "fair" deck.

To not lose to easy hate.

Unfair decks have answers that can shut the decks down. Using fast mana and artifact synergies to storm off with Jhoira? Damping Sphere , Null Rod , Karn, the Great Creator , Rule of Law , Stony Silence , Arcane Laboratory , and plenty of other cards single-handedly kill that strategy.

Think graveyard lists, then Tormod's Crypt , Relic of Progenitus , Leyline of the Void , Rest in Peace , Ground Seal , Silent Gravestone , etc.

Fair decks do less busted things, but have less cards that hate on them.

Cyberseb: I just mean it doesn't end with a 2-3 card combo like all of my other decks; it wins via commander damage or regular beatdown or an overwhelming board position.

SynergyBuild is right in that I have a "fair" deck built specifically for playgroups that get upset if you win with a combo and then target you with a lot of hate and attention next round. Some people mind losing less if it's to a million Myr or a giant Eldrazi rather than infinite damage through Aluren bounce or something.

It also means that the deck is more variable, because my combo decks are very linear in that a lot of cards are redundant pieces to search for, protect, or execute the combo. The Kozilek deck doesn't have such a straightforward game plan - it's just ramp, draw, and see what big things you can play.

I think it also depends on how competitive you want to be. Niv Reborn can easily be a top tier cEDH deck but pretty much only if you play Food Chain , like Tazri or Prossh. Bolas is high tier but certainly not competitive, as is the case with Kozilek. If you don't play Food Chain, Niv isn't as great and you'd have better luck with him, for example, in the 99 of a Scion deck IMO.
