5 color out of hand

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Feb. 4, 2021, 2:43 p.m. by Beed95

So I am thinking of a deck utilizing the new "foretold" mechanic as well as using the idea of casting out of areas other then your hand and benefiting from it. Sen Triplets being one of the many ways to cast from others hands. (Was once the commander idea)

Now I just wonder what direction I should go, wizard tribal, blink, party, artifact, and a few other ways.

I am fairly new to deck building and have a few already I believe work well enough.

Ah also I already pre-ordered the fortold commander deck.

Personaly i dont find Sen Triplets to work well as a commander. Its presence generates massive hate and someone alsways saves awnsers so that you never get to use it.
Maybe pick somthing lower profile and put the triples in the deck
Also consider picking up red to cast other players cards from there hands and exile.

I see, perhaps a recommendation? If not the commander I would like to have them in the 99

maybe Jodah, Archmage Eternal ?
wubrg may not be ideal but having access to 5 colors makes it a lot easier to utilize Sen Triplets ability, and its keeping with the wizard tribal you were considering

Perhaps Ramos, Dragon Engine might be a good idea?

As a commander it's fine. Its powerful but it'll force you to play "un-fun"cards to play it. It falls into the realm of too strong for casual and too weak for competitive. Probably best to talk to your play group before making a theft deck lol

The idea behind the deck is less about theft and more about casting from various places besides the hand and gaining benefits, one of those places can be the opponents hands. A big card that inspired this sort of deck was Vega, the Watcher .

Beed95 I'm going to echo RNR and Ramble and recommend avoiding a Sen deck unless it's something you're really interested in doing. Sen is a very anti-fun commander and will either be nonfunctional or very oppressive depending on your group and budget.

Now as for Vega, you can definitely do that and take it in some fun wacky directions. Obviously he's fantastic for the foretold mechanic, but I personally built him to be an artifact centric engine commander.

If you're interested you can look Vega Finds the Center of the Tootsie-Pop.

TL;DR I would avoid Sen, but your theme idea can totally work for other commanders!

Well you're definitely going 5c then. Probably go with kenny

February 5, 2021 3:41 a.m.

Dont forget Elsha of the Infinite you could easily just have your deck be jeskai and have her at the helm or just chuck her in the 99

as RNR_Gaming stated Kenrith, the Returned King is an amazing 5 color commander
personally i struggle to build Kenrith, the Returned King with flavor, because every time i build him it just ends up being a deck filled with mana loops
if your able to stay on track of your goal he would definitely perform well

I hide Sen Triplets in my Atraxa counters deck. People don't expect it. I know it doesn't really fit in there, but it's fun to draw hate for other stuff like Doubling Season, Simic Ascendancy, and Hexdrinker, and then cast Sen Triplets.

I am going Vega, the Watcher and use foretell, rebound, flashback and maybe adventure spells and things like that.

So then you all would recommend Kenrith, the Returned King over Ramos, Dragon Engine ? Ken seems like a great card though I don't see the bonus to having him in this sort of deck other then access to all five colors and a bit of group manipulation.

February 5, 2021 2:24 p.m.

Massacar says... #17

Kenrith, the Returned King is a toolbox who you can dump mana into depending on your specific needs in a situation/environment making him far more flexible.

Ramos, Dragon Engine is a powerful ramp engine, but has a steeper CMC, requires more work to get a payoff. For example, you can't maximize Ramos's effects without optimizing to cast multicolor spells as often as possible once he's out to get more than just 1 +1/+1 per spell.

So generally speaking Kenrith seems the better choice, at least in my personal opinion.

February 5, 2021 2:40 p.m.

I personally don't like kenrith as the commander for any deck. He is very good, very useful, and is a top tier cEDH commander even... just super boring.

5 options I see for you other than kenny:

The First Sliver cascade allows you to cast the spell you find and it never sees your hand. Im not suggesting make a sliver tribal deck, you can add just a couple utility slivers or changelings like Realmwalker or Harmonic Sliver that are handy without tfs, but can trigger the cascade every once in a while.

Sisay, Weatherlight Captain her ability doesn't directly allow you to cast from out of hand, but it can be used to get things that allow you to cast from out of hand such as God-Eternal Kefnet or Grenzo, Havoc Raiser or... well any of the other 4 commander options I'm suggesting. She is probably the best way for you to play triplets

Esika, God of the Tree  Flip essentially just play the enchant side and it acts similar to sisay, but it can get stronger things faster though you have far less control over what you find.

Elsha of the Infinite this isn't 5c, but I think she would be my go to for this build. Jeskai seems the most needed for the theme and she does exactly what you want. Sensei's Divining Top gets stupid good with elsha.

Sen Triplets I have issues with triplets, but they fit the bill like you said and would be viable for the deck despite being 3 color. People just seem to get overzealous against triplets decks and triplets have to make it around the table which often they dont.

I would play any of these before kenrith if you aren't playing cEDH (or a group hug deck I guess). They will be far more flavorful and they will do the thing your deck wants to.

To back up GhostChieftain's The First Sliver idea, you could also run a few cards like Conspiracy and Arcane Adaptation .

A small correction, but I was looking into cards for a Vega deck and learned that God-Eternal Kefnet 's copied spells are cast from your hand, which is disappointing. That said, Kefnet still works well with Vega because of the card draw trigger.

1empyrean thank you for the correction

I agree with the above. I think there is a big difference between cast out of library vs. revealing & ripping something from someone else's hand. One big difference being that triplets often plays down the resource disparity path & causes a lot of salt by way of resource disparity. I made an Atla Palani, Nest Tender deck that focused on topdeck play with opponent's libraries & topdecking my own deck as well, that picked up less salt - except from players that assumed it was competitive Atla. Ripping out of graveyards is a little more niche, so will get less table-wide hate & unfun factor. Thieving Amalgam is an example of something where the opponents at least aren't losing their best hand options & they may never even know what they are missing anyway. Though I think he is a shit.. & lazy card design: Golos, Tireless Pilgrim could also be your guy. A commander that fetches a land & if he is protected you don't really need card draw... just activate & play out of library.

GhostChieftain Certainly interesting ideas and all fit the bill well, I have always been hesitant on using cascade as a theme only because I hear that playgroups find it to be either repetitive or much like solitaire where only one person is playing.

Though my group is fairly notorious for infinite combos to the point that I made a group slug out of Mogis, God of Slaughter that is known as one of my more hated decks due to having functions that halt a lot of said combos.

I digress, Esika, God of the Tree  Flip Seems good for a commander, though does not see any cast does still see etbs and can get some powerful peices on the board quickly. I did pull her and saw potential as well. However I wonder exactly how I would go about building such a deck.

Elsha of the Infinite fits the bill beautifully, and has alot of potential. Though not in five color as you mentioned my only concern would be ramp in that case due to the three colors having a lack of buildup without some possibly expensive cards.

Sisay, Weatherlight Captain I actually have a shrine enchantment deck made with this very commander and she works well, fitting the theme of "out of hand" still in the manner that you can fetch for key peices so a good inclusion into the list of possible commanders.

Gleeock Atla Palani, Nest Tender A interesting idea I didn't think of but could be fun Golos, Tireless Pilgrim A good card that I see often and fits well. Though I see him played and hated off the board quite quickly.

These are all great suggestions I shall be making several test decks from the cards I have on hand to get critiques and suggestions.

So this might be a stupid question but with Orvar, the All-Form 's ability triggering first as a bounce spell is targeting a permanent you control. The state is checked again soon as its ability triggers correct? This would mean legendary permanents that are being copied and then bounced by the spell the copy would not remain on the battlefield due to the "legend's rule" having seen the state of the board as soon as Orvar's ability ends but before your spell goes off?

February 12, 2021 7:17 p.m.

1empyrean says... #25

Beed95 Yes. Game state is checked and state based actions are taken after Orvar's trigger resolves, then, assuming no responses, the bounce spell resolves.

Alright, So here is the first version of what I like to call "Bounce, Blink, Cast" deck. From the first look it seems a bit competitive but that's probably because of the high value cards. Bounce,Blink,Cast

I wanted to give some feed back on Elsha of the Infinite I ran a deck since I bought the precon she was the one that caught my eye. I have run several different version of her but if you go with her it is worth buying Sensei's Divining Top no matter which strategy you go with when building her.

I started off as more of a storm deck and moved to a copy spell storm deck and she always been strong but she is the one I have powered up as the LGS I switched to has some cedh decks I play against sometimes. I held my own against them to a degree but now it is easier with my upgrades. Any ways from day 1 your best friend is mana ramp sol ring, all three talisman also may want to think about signets.

Until my last round of land upgrades I ran a lot more basics in the deck i ran Land Tax which worked great getting lands out of my deck it is now going to move to a different deck.

If you have top and Helm of Awakening you can storm so easy same for Cloud Key you can also use Kykar, Wind's Fury because you create a spirit when you cast sac the spirit for red mana and also the new Birgi, God of Storytelling  Flip

anyways good luck on what ever your decision and if you build her on your many options of a deck build

Here is a bit more focused deck only using three of the colors and a lesser used commander. The Tyrant has Foretold
