So I've been playing commander and magic for a long time but I've never been a competitive player. Now my LGS is running 1v1 tournaments with those rules. First time I showed up not even knowing they were doing it so I went in with a Volrath, the Shapestealer deck for the luls and placed I think 7th out of 13? So I went back with something I thought would do better. The Cult Of Duels... I was wrong.

I'm not sure if I want to make Athreos playable in the tournament or if I want to build something else entirely. I'm open to suggestions.

The best decks showing up are deciding the game within the first 4 turns and then winning either that turn or within the next 3. A lot of the meta is creature combat. Decks like combo Krenko, Mob Boss . Another deck is Sram, Senior Edificer with Pacifism tribal and equipment and swing to win.

I rather enjoy combo decks and would really rather have black as at least one of my colors if you suggest something other than my current deck.

The ban list looks pretty confusing. Are they going by wizards ban list or rules committee ban list? I'm not really sure I just know most black edh combo decks revolve around Buried Alive and Ad Nauseam if those cards aren't banned I'd look into building a Sidisi, Undead Vizer deck.

You could always check out some tournment data or look at the lab maniacs cedh teir list for some ideas; granted you'd have to edit some due to the ban list. Toshiro Umezawa feels like the type of commander that would just tear a creature meta apart.

I think Athreos, God of Passage tribal Shadowborn Apostle is a quite competitive deck, can stomp really fast with black mana ramp and huge demons.

Other good choices for competitive decks could be:
