Mageta the lion

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Feb. 9, 2020, 8:15 p.m. by Joe_Ken_

Been wanting to build a mono-white deck for awhile and while recently we have received very good commanders with the new Heliod and God eternal Oketra I was thinking maybe using an older commander could be more fun and put the deck at a more casual level.

What I was thinking of was using Mageta the Lion to keep a board of indestructible creatures / Gideon planeswalkers to try and overpower my opponents while also running as many cards with flashback or other graveyard uses to try and make his tap ability less of a pain to work with. Any help with this would be appreciated.

So the biggest issue with running Mageta is that he wants you to discard 2 cards to use his ability. This is a problem in white because your consistent card draw is limited. You'll want to dedicate a large portion of your deck to card draw, I'd say around 15 cards. Since you are discarding and blowing shit up you might have a subtheme of reanimation. People usually think of that as black but it is in white's wheelhouse too. You can combine it with the indestructible stuff and just call it protection, maybe 10 cards?

Here is every white card that can draw, I'll list some of the specific ones I like. Draw in White

Well of Lost Dreams, Sram, Senior Edificer, Smuggler's Copter, Skullclamp, Mind's Eye, Mind Stone, Geier Reach Sanitarium, Endbringer, Dawn of Hope, Conqueror's Galleon  Flip, Book of Rass and Alms Collector.

Yea card draw should be the whole deck. I'm thinking a creature-less deck

Run Kormus Bell to punish the players the have swamps.

Indestructible definitely will be important:

Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Darksteel Plate, Hammer of Nazahn and Shield of Kaldra are good choices for that. To find these equipments, how about Open the Armory and Steelshaper's Gift? Maybe also Stoneforge Mystic?

Man, this deck might get expensive...

Oh yeah: Zetalpa, Primal Dawn

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Elspeth, Knight-Errant's emblem to go with griffstick's idea, muhahaha. Don't actually expect this to ever happen... I just think it is funny.

I like the Kormus Bell idea. Maybe throw in a Mystic Compass to hit some nasty non-basics?

February 10, 2020 12:15 a.m.

While we are suggesting some very expensive and/or very nasty cards, what does Joe_Ken_ say about our ideas so far? Are we thinking too expensive? Are thete more preferences or restrictions on what and what not to include? That would be important to know.

I like the card draw suggestions from DrukenReaps since they will pretty much be necessary for the deck. I think Kormus Bell is interesting, but I don’t think it will come up that often and it is a little high cmc for what it does. Wish there was more stuff similar to it besides stuff in green. Also I don’t know if Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth would really make the card worth playing either since it would rarely ever come up that I would have both of those cards. As for seshiro_of_the_orochi I don’t know if I’d want to sink crazy money into the deck for stuff like stone forge and big Avacyn since it is meant be more of casual mid power kind of deck. I was thinking stuff along the line of Make a Stand for instant speed indestructible, but I do know that I have a Open the Armory and Steelshaper's Gift around in my collection somewhere as well as other good white cards like Emeria Shepherd , Land Tax , and Smothering Tithe

That's exactly the reason I asked. I like the idea of using cards like Make a Stand. I'll try to make more suggestions based on that premiss.

If you happen to have Emeria, The Sky Ruin, that might definitely be a good choice. I know it's quite pricey again, but the next suggestions will be cheaper.

Mageta is somewhat similar to Heartless Hidetsugu in that he needs haste to be more effective. So Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots are especially important for him. After cleaning the board, a voltron package might be a good choice to win, so adding a couple of ways to untap Mageta seem important.

Another commander comparable to him is Massacre Girl as she is another boardwipe from the command zone. Some nice tech for her is playing a boardwipe package in the 99 to surprise opponents who consider your commander your only wipe.

I feel like some cards like Eternal Dragon may be useful for the deck since I can either discard him to the ability, return him to hand if I don’t have anything to do for the turn, or plains cycle him.

How many board wipes? I'm thinking 7

griffstick says... #15

Definitely have the Nevinyrral's Disk and Magus of the Disk because they pair very well with indestructible so add Soul of New Phyrexia and there you have your budget repeated board wipe.

Cool. I also think that Planar Birth will be a really great card to slot into the deck since it will make it an easy choice to discard lands if I have it in hand and most people I know tend to run multicolor decks.

6-7 board wipes is probably good.

Ok so how do we win or is this a trolling deck.

Probably equipping Mageta with something like Blackblade Reforged and some other equipments and auras to go for commander damage after clearing out the board. Also Shadowspear will be a good include to get rid of protection on of their creatures.

I'll make a rough deck list either tonight or tomorrow and I'll be sure to post it here.

February 10, 2020 12:56 p.m.

Regarding possible wipes: Divine Reckoning and Single Combat are perfect. Imagine how your opponents are preparing for a Mageta-activation, propably keeping a fist full of powerful creatures OR filling the board with walkers that generate value and don't die to Mageta to either have happen a wipe that telegraphs to happen again or have their walkers get wiped and being unable to unload their full hand. Just perfect.

I think the one spell for turn is necessary for this deck. Simply because you'll need to keep 2 cards and 4 mana every turn.

griffstick maybe if I do that kind of stuff with Rule of Law type effects I could add Vedalken Orrery , Emergence Zone , Angel of the Dire Hour , Sigarda's Aid , and Shimmer Myr

Joe_Ken_ says... #26

I only suggest Vedalken orrery since I have opened one in the past, otherwise I wouldn’t have that for the list.

Mageta the reanimator

Take a look at my deck, might give you some ideas. Boardwipe at instant speed proves a deterrent enough for white to ramp into Angels, the best tribe for mono-W reanimator

Got the deck sort of done. I feel like it is very rough though and could still use some work.
