Is Akroma Too Expensive for My EDH Decks?

Commander Deck Help forum

I have a copy of Akroma, Angel of Wrath in every EDH deck of mine that contains the color white and a copy of Akroma, Angel of Fury in every edh deck of mine that contains the color red (therefore, decks that contain both of those colors also contain both of those creatures), and the reason for that is because she is my favorite card in the entire game.

However, I recently have been wondering if I should keep those cards in my decks, because of their very high mana costs; they do not strongly contribute to the central themes of those decks, and are there mainly because of how awesome they are (and there is also the fact that every one of my EDH decks contains Akroma's Memorial , which makes the angel herself, or at least her white incarnation, redundant), as I built those decks many years ago, when I was less experienced at building decks.

Therefore, I must ask everyone if I should keep Akroma in my EDH decks, or if it would be better to remove her in favor of less expensive cards; what does everyone else say about this?

It entirely depends on the deck and your preferred playstyle. But as a general rule, you should never run a card in all of your decks just bceuase it fits within the colours. A card should actually be assessed for a deck prior to making its way into the 100.

Truth be told this is a you thing and it depends on how you feel. Strategy dictates that a card shouldn't be put into every deck but the fact that is your favorite card in the entire game is a reason to put it in your decks. Personally, I think you should have fun first and worry about everything being efficient later, if it's your favorite card, play it!

enpc, Deadpoo111, Thank you for your words, and I shall evaluate each deck individually.

Magic is, first off, a game, and it should be fun. If these cards are fun for you, then have at it.

Now, if you're looking to start focusing decks a bit more, making them more efficient and more focused, then you have to start considering cards like these and their inclusion in decks. If you are casting an 8-drop or higher, then it should probably be a game winner or at least a game changer. 6 power flyers are nothing to sniff at, but you have to figure if they actually fit into what you are trying to do or not.

bushido_man96, yes, I do enjoy this game very much, and I care more about the quality of my victories than their quantity, but 8 mana is a high cost for cards that do not guarantee victory, so I have been replacing them in several of my decks.

You'd be better off building a deck specifically around playing the two Akromas rather than just putting them in every deck. That way you can have a specific deck devoted to the thing you love rather than running them in places where they might be the wrong choice for the list.

You could either run them as "secret commanders" with another suitable main commander, or you build them as an unofficial partner list. Just run it by your playgroup first, but I can't really see an issue with this in a causal setting for a high CMC Boris beats deck.

DemonDragonJ, I have seen like 12 of your threads in which you say that you run some high cmc very situational card in every single one of your decks that you can. Someone then says you shouldn't do that, and then you say you will evaluate each deck individually. Then you post another thread about a high cmc card you run in every deck that you probably shouldn't. In my opinion, the only things you should be running in every possible deck are going to be low cost (<4 cmc) ramp, draw, or removal and everything else is situational.

That being said, if you want to run something because you love the card then just do it and haters be damned. After all, it is your deck and you can do what you want.
