I Need Some Help Making the Transformation Mechanic Less Frustrating

Commander Deck Help forum

I think I've found a partial solution to my problem, since I don't want to constantly be taking my werewolf cards in and out of their sleeves during transformations: Dragon Shield clear, matte sleeves (I wish there was an Ultra Pro equivalent).

These sleeves will make flipping my werewolves a lot easier, but unfortunately, I can't leave them in my library with transformed side revealed.

So, I've considered placing inserts into the backs of my werewolf cards and subsequently removing these inserts, once my werewolves hit the battlefield.

However, there are two issues:

1) I would have to cut out a lot of paper inserts and/or find some to use.

2) I double-sleeve my cards, so I don't know that the paper inserts would fit.

Do you guys have a solution that you could contribute toward this problem?

Thank you.

Update: paper inserts seem to work (I slotted one into Purphoros, God of the Forge a few moments ago, but it's not a clear sleeve, so I can't see how well it looks).

The questions that remain are:

1) What's the most efficient way to cut out 33+ paper inserts?

2) How difficult is it going to be to shuffle a double-sleeved deck with paper inserts?

3) Will a deck with paper inserts actually fit into a deck box (probably not)?

For cutting, you can go to your local library--they will probably have one of the large paper cutters that can do long cuts really quickly, usually going through multiple pages at once.

As for the rest, that is going to depend on what quality and thickness of paper you use.

They have check list cards you can use. Also why not just slide a basic land behind the card?

any change in thickness can effect shuffle, even slight ones like paper inserts can be seen as a gap and are often subconsciously cut to which will put your creatures on the bottom of the deck.
I just keep my transformers in the token pile and mark them in the deck by writing on basic lands with a permanent marker. when i cast them i just put the real card over the top of the marker card which makes flipping really easy.
they do have official inserts but there not easy to collect and personally i cant bring myself to spend money to order them.

I personally agree with Ramble. My preferred method is to put all my DFCs in clear sleeves and keep them with my tokens. I use the official "proxies" you can get in packs, but I've used lands before too, it really doesn't matter to me as long as it's only a single-card thick and has a Magic back. Playing/transforming DFCs are as easy as creating a token this way.

However, I'd imagine your werewolf deck has upwards of 30 DFCs, which might require a larger deck box. Maybe consider one of those "dual" EDH deckboxes, and just use the other side for tokens and DFCs.

Another, more baller option would be to get two of all your DFCs and sleeve half of them backwards... and then keep them with your tokens.

I have an old, mostly foiled-out Modern Werewolf deck..

I ended up doing what the last two suggested; clear sleeves on the side and checklist cards in the deck itself. However, since I had non-foils of all of the Foil Werewolves, I eventually replaced the checklist cards for non-foils in the main..

Well there's not much you can do here. You could proxy the backs and sideboard them.

I went to staples and just scanned in cards and printed them out, slid it in over on top of a bull shit card and it looked like a real card under the sleeve

I don't have that many DFCs in my Commander decks but I just put them in Dragon Shield Clears and used the checklist cards or MDFC note cards. Left them out for a day after I was done writing on them (or blacking out the old checklist cards). For my Hanweir Battlements/Garrison I used to have a land flipped around and a piece of paper inserted that said "HANWEIR LANDHALF/HANWEIR DUDEHALF" and kept the actual cards separate, but I just switched to the MDFC note cards.
