How Good is the Immortal Sun in EDH?

Commander Deck Help forum

I have a copy of The Immortal Sun in many of my EDH decks, because of its overall value, but I recently have been wondering if it is truly a good card for every deck, since it costs 6 mana to cast and may not provide an immediate benefit, so I have already remvoed it from several of my decks.

What does everyone else say about this? How good is The Immortal Sun in EDH?

It has 3 relevant abilities, and if you’re not playing planeswalkers, then it has 4.

Drawing extra card every turn, insane.

Buffing your creatures, good.

Making all your spells cheaper, pairs very nicely with all those extra cards you’re drawing off the other ability.

I don’t play much EDH, but it can also hose your opponents commander if it’s a planeswalker.

Daveslab2022, I can probably keep it in some of my decks, but, in the case of the the three decks from which I have removed it, I replaced it with cards that far better suited the decks' themes, so I shall evaluate each deck individually.

I think it is very much a jack of all trades, master of none card. Each thing it does is okay (though I'd maintain Phyrexian Arena effects are pretty bad on their own) and together they do a lot of things one might want... the problem is that you often will be better off using a focused card that significantly advances your deck, rather than a catch-all card that incrementally advances different things simultaneously. That it sits at the top of your curve and three of its four abilities are things you would want early in the game (card draw--the longer before you get once-per-turn card draw, the fewer cards it draws you; ramp; a hatebears piece to stop opponent threats) is also not a great feature.

Personally, I got one in a pack and put it in every edh deck, just to cut it later. For a dedicated artifact deck that can reduce costs or pump out tons of colorless, I think it's amazing, but for most casual decks I don't know. By 6 mana you really want to be impacting the game and it's mostly a, pay 6 and then wait a turn to get the full benefit. But if you can cheat it out early, it's amazing.

I think it's really good, but as much as it looks like a card that would go in any deck with good ramp, it's actually way more specific which decks might want it.

Feels like something I regularly pull & replace with a 6CMC ETB bomb. Typically I have recursion setup for 6CMC pieces though, so a 6CMC incremental engine piece is hard for me to swallow, unless I play artifact engine or artifact cheaty decks.... which I don't :)

In casual play with friends, it can be good. But in somewhat competitive play such as at an LGS, or actual competitive play, it's not good at all. For 6 mana, there's a lot more you can do.

It's really only one of those kitchen table cards, in my opinion. I've slotted it in many decks over the years, and it always gets cut because it'll be in my hand sitting and doing nothing because I always find a better use for 6 mana.

I've had it in and our of my Captain Sisay deck a few times. It's a powerful tutor target if I'm facing a superfriends deck. I also have a lot of ramp in that deck so it's not super difficult to cast in the mid-game. In general I'd say it's pretty niche. It has it's uses, but not for every deck.

I think it's bad if you're paying 6 for it, unless you're playing a hyper-ramp deck. My playgroup has zero planeswalkers outside a single superfriends deck, so without that ability being relevant I would not put it in any deck with the intention of casting it.

Cheating it in is attractive, though I'd might consider something like a Gearhulk, Coveted Jewel (if I can sacrifice it), or even Wurmcoil Engine instead.

I think it is a trap. Walkers are just weaker in EDH so having a card to hose them is eh. Each individual part is not something I would pay 6 mana for and the total doesnt look that great.

I have two of them got one for $8 back in the day and pulled the other in a draft it is not a $20 card it is fine in some metas. I have them in decks but they are not my strongest decks and it is ok for those decks. You would be better off spending $20 on a fetchland over Immortal Sun
