How Good is Comet Storm in EDH?

Commander Deck Help forum

I have Comet Storm in many of my EDH decks, because it is such an amazing damage-dealing spell, but it takes a great amount of mana for it to truly have a significant effect upon a game, so I am wondering if I should keep it in my decks, especially when there are many comparable cards that require less mana to make a major impact upon a game.

I definitely am keeping that card in any deck that contains Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, because her ability to increase damage is such an amazing ability, but, in other decks, the inclusion of Comet Storm is negotiable.

What does everyone else say about this? How good of a card is Comet Storm in EDH?

I mean outside of mono red and gruul there are better board wipes

shadow63: Comet Storm can also target planeswalkers or players. so with infinite mana, it wins the game.

I run Comet Storm in my Mizzix of the Izmagnus deck because she literally cancels out any downsides it has as far as cost is concerned. Otherwise, I don't run it at all.

I overall think it's a 'meh' card. It seems to take too much mana to be good and you lose too much with too many targets. Good in specific decks but I do not believe it is good enough to be considered a staple or a card every red deck wants.

I mean, mana wise Gisela is much better with more widespread cards like Rolling Earthquake which also takes use of the preventing ability. It can't hit walkers, but that's a side point. Also, Comet Storm is less mana efficient, and is even (mostly) worse than Blasphemous Act as a sweeper. If you want a finisher, go for Banefire, as the can't be countered ability is much more important than multiple targets when assuredly you are gonna get countered. If you are in a non-mono red scenario, just get a better finisher. Every other color has better ones than white, Finale of Glory, Craterhoof Behemoth/Genesis Wave, and good blue draw X spell lol, Exsanguinate even xD

Opinions of that card seem to be varied, so, perhaps, I should examine each deck that I have that contains that card, and decide with what card I should replace it.

Electrodominance is a very nice spell, since it is literally a two-for-one and has the same mana cost as Comet Storm, although it, also, requires great investment of mana in order to produce a significant effect.

SynergyBuild, all of those suggestions are great, but I would like to keep the color balance in my decks relatively the same.

SynergyBuild, forgive the triple post, but I cannot edit my posts, and Inferno is an instant, compared with Rolling Earthquake, which is a sorcery, a fact that very frequently may make a significant difference.

While true, Rolling Earthquake is a much better mana dump, as well as actually being cEDH viable, removing insanely early threats like a ton of mana dorks or small goblins or vampires right before they overtake you in the early game, or ending games with infinite mana or a ton of mana and enough life to survive or an effect like Angel's Grace, Gisela, etc.

You must run a bunch of cookie-cutter decks. All of your post start like this one, about a card you run in most or all of your decks. It doesn't sound like a fun way to build.

That said, I'd say no, Comet Storm shouldn't be in every deck. It can be a good finisher in some, especially if you can reliably whittle down all of your opponents and then finish them off all at once with a Comet Storm. But unless you run some big mana or are specially set up to take advantage of big X spells, there are better options than Comet Storm.

bushido_man96, I built many of my decks when I was still new to this game, so many of them do feel very similar to each other, but I have been improving them as time has passed and I have learned more about this game.

What are some suggestions that you would have for replacing Comet Storm?

Replacements depend on your deck, its theme, and how it performs. A deck list is very helpful.

bushido_man96, I have already replaced Comet Storm with Genesis Ultimatum in my Riku of Two Reflections deck, but I wonder if I should replace it in my Thraximundar deck or my Kresh the Bloodbraided deck. I have contemplated Exsanguinate for both decks, and it would be great for the red/black/green deck, but the red/black/blue deck already has too strong of an imbalance in favor of black, so I do not wish to make that imbalance even worse.

I mean, why would running more black be bad, why in the world do you need a balance lol?

King_marchesa says... #16

In decks that have black in them Torment of Hailfire is just a better option

August 22, 2020 7:48 p.m.

King_marchesa: before you can say "better", you have to decide "better at what". the cards do different things. thats like trying to decide which card is "better" between Lightning Bolt and Counterspell

I agree with SynergyBuild. Multi colored decks don't need to be, and often shouldn't be, balanced. A lot of the decks I run green in will run heavy green, especially for ramp and card draw purposes. I've got a Glissa deck that is heavy black. Slimefoot is heavy green. Balance should be based on your game plan, not the colors in the deck.

It’s perfect for a Natural Disaster deck... Just sayin’... ;p

Apologies, I couldn't help myself!

DragonSliver9001 Great question! Lightning Bolt can target creatures, walkers, and players, is cheaper mana wise than Counterspell and can be cast after they resolve, however Counterspell can deal with nearly and card, but costs more mana, can stop them before they resolve and get value, and doesn't care how much toughness/loyalty they have.

I think for EDH, Counterspell is the winner, while yes twice the mana is important, EDH has much bigger creatures, and walkers as well, making bolt not hit very much moving into the late game, however counter can hit opposing permanents and also protect your own, letting you set up for game winning plays rather than just slow down your opponents.

It's the obvious choice going in by looking at meta shares, but also makes logical sense!

The real question is Crimson Kobolds or Crookshank Kobolds? Obviously Kobolds of Kher Keep are the best, but what's the second best O.o

August 23, 2020 1:54 a.m.

SynergyBuild: no apologies needed as that perfectly illustrated my point lol. and yeah i'm not running bolt in commander. but i'll run Counterspell if i'm in blue.

SynergyBuild, as far as I can determine, all three kobolds are exactly the same, or is that the joke?

August 23, 2020 6:30 p.m.

SynergyBuild I know that was a kobolds joke, but only. Kobolds of Kher Keep were good enough to go on to become a token lol

I think that means Prossh just thought they tasted better.
