Help push me in a direction

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on March 20, 2019, 1:34 p.m. by Jayph

I am going to try commander in a casual setting to mix it up and would like to go with a tribe themes to start. I have a good base of cards to build either a zombie deck or goblin deck with only having to buy a few singles to fill it out. I also am really attracted to dinosaurs for some reason but it would require a bit more money spent.

So not looking for a deck list I will take care of that but just help me choose a direction to go.

Goblins,Zombies,or dinosaurs?

Thanks

Jason

Tell me your budget and I'll make a dino deck.

Also, do whatever you think you'd have the most fun in.

personally, as far as tribes go I feel like Dino's is the most fun. They're less refined but more variety of effects and combos. That said do what you feel. Both goblins and zombies are both well developed tribes with many different routes you can take.

Thats the problem Iam having, They all sound fun. I have the majority of cards already to do goblins or zombies but I have played them both in regular casual magic already. I know they would both work but I am finding dinosaurs really intriguing for some reason but would have to go shopping. Which isn't a horrible thing I guess.

What budget do you have. I could make Gishath for like 10 dollars.

I was building a dino deck on the site here for regular magic before I decided to try commander, and I have never been good at three color decks and getting the mana right. I switched a naya deck out to a gruul deck for that reason. So Iam intimidated in a single card only format mono color just seems bomb proof.

let's approach it this way, what commanders would yo pick for each tribe? how much variety of stratagie do they provide. Krenko, Mob Boss is a good card but a preatty linear build, where as Gishath, Sun's Avatar has a lot of more variety to build, IMHO. SO who would you pick for each tribe

its true that its safer, in terms of getting mana screwed but there are lots of ways to fix/ramp mana in edh too!

Huge fan of Wort, Boggart Auntie as goblin commanders go, recurring a gobo every turn is insane value. Repeating Goblin Ringleader , Goblin Matron , Goblin Recruiter , or Siege-Gang Commander effects as you sacrifice them on endstep for any number of effects allows you to acre amazing card advantage.

Hey, adding black to Goblins is good not just for Wort, but for adding a sacrifice and drain opponent life strategies. Zulaport Cutthroat , Blood Artist , Judith, the Scourge Diva , Goblin Bombardment , Skirk Prospector , Viscera Seer , Goblin Chirurgeon , Diabolic Intent , Siege-Gang Commander , etc. These strategies are also good with Goblin tokens with Krenko, Mob Boss , Goblin Rabblemaster , etc.

I have a Krenko, Mob Boss and I have a Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, I would be starting fresh with the Dinosaurs creature wise but would have lots of land and supporting cards for all three decks. Budget is variable lower is always better, top end would be $125

Dinosaurs are fun, and there are several options to go with. There is an Elder Dinosaur Legend in each of the colors, and two in Naya, so you have options (although the black one is pretty hard to play with in EDH). Naya is great to play with, because it provides a well-rounded deck that has answers to any threat, and provides you with the card draw and mana ramp available in green. Gishath, Sun's Avatar is a great commander for a dinosaur tribe, and you can really spend as much or as little as you want to get it started.

of the three, zombies would probably be the strongest. goblins are often really small and dinos don't have a lot of support that is exclusive to them just yet. Varina, Lich Queen would be the best zombie commander.

if you're open to other tribes, my personal favorites are slivers with a Sliver Legion commander, or dragons with Scion of the Ur-Dragon at the lead. unfortunately, 5c mana bases get real expensive real fast, even with zero original dual lands.

There aren't that many dinosaurs compared to zombies and goblins so dinosaur tribal decks are mostly the same. Tribal decks are pretty formulaic no matter what but the narrower card pool of dinosaurs makes their decks even more homogeneous. If that's not an issue than go for it, Gishath is a blast to trigger. There's just a lot more variation within the goblin and zombie tribes that can facilitate building interesting and unique decks. So that's what I vote for. Also since the card pools for those tribes are so deep they can be quite strong decks as well. Good luck.

Go Goblin mono-red and use Krenko, Mob Boss as your commander. Shenanigans can ensue.

The deck I’ve wanted to build for a while is dinos, focused on the enrage mechanic. Deal damage to everything, get value. Keep other players’ dorks and tokens off the board. Etc.

Goblins and zombies are fun, but both been done a lot.

I decided on dinos. Grabbed an average deck of edhrec and started there. Feel free to come give some advice Jays Dinos (first try linking so bare with me if it doesn't work) I know it's higher than my budget above but I pretty much already have the entire mana base listed and some of the other non creature cards so it hits under my budget when I actually priced out what I would need to buy. Thanks in advance.

Jayph I hope you have a good time building and playing. The build might be standard but each game can be drastically different because of the ability so I hope its fun to play!
