Help me cut cards for Yuriko

Commander Deck Help forum

Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow

A few things to keep in mind when helping me find cuts-

-Check the "Custom Categories" tab to get a breakdown of this deck's themes.

-The idea of the deck is to run evasive creatures with ETB effects. This both helps me trigger Ninjutsu but also rewards me for replaying the creatures again and again.

-I ran a bunch of tutor effects to help me get things like Arcane Adaptation or Cover of Darkness if I already have a card to make everything Ninjas. Not sure what the correct number of tutor effects is, or the correct number of "MakeMoreNinjas" cards.

-I also tried to run a number of discounted high CMC spells like Treasure Cruise to benefit Yuriko's ability.

  • I want to run about 20 of the "ETBvasion" creatures. This is where most of the cuts will come from.

-If you think I have too many of a type of card in another category let me know and I can fine tune it a bit.

-Ignore the landbase for now, I am fine tuning it at the moment.

Thanks in advance for all tips!

Kemokyle any tips for cuts or must-includes?

I think you're splitting your focus between ETB/Evasion creatures and setting up the top of your library for Yuriko's triggered ability a bit too much.

Cuts I recommend: Metallic Mimic - Is a ninja, buffs ninjas, but no evasion built in so will be harder to trigger Yuriko. You've got enough creature type fixing to gain more benefit off Yuriko triggers than an extra counter.

Kathari Remnant - I feel like most of your cuts are going to come from your 1-3 drops since you want a higher average CMC for Yuriko's triggers, so the cascade will be lackluster.

Amoeboid Changeling - Once one of your board-wide subtype changers hits the board (especially since you're tutoring for them), since this doesn't have evasion, I don't think it'll see much use.

Consign // Oblivion - The bounce is nice, 2 discards from someone is a little meh. But feel like you can just have creatures that bounce your board to gain more benefit like Faerie Impostor.

Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive - Besides herself, you only have 4 creatures in your list with power/toughness 1 that don't already have evasion built in, 3 of which are ninjutsu creatures that will likely be unblocked anyways.

Dragonlord Silumgar - Good CMC for Yuriko's trigger, and a nice ETB effect. But they get the creature back when you ninjutsu him away, and he's a little pricey to tack onto a ninjutsu cost to regain the same target.

Also Trickery Charm - The modes are nice, but you have subtype fixing that you're tutoring for, so that mode will most often be dead. Most of your creatures have/give evasion, or are unblocked from a ninjutsu ability, so that kills that mode too in most cases. Which just leaves the setting up the top 4 of your library as the mode that will be most selected, which you still have a large amount of which going on with this being cut.

Kemokyle thanks for the tips, I can agree with most of those. I have loved Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive though since she gives my Ninjas evasion in the turns after they hit the board. Also helps if my opponents have lots of flyers to block my ETB creatures.

And Consign // Oblivion is mainly in there right now because its a 7 cmc spell that won't cost me 7. Still not sure how I feel about it though.

Otherwise will probably make all those cuts though.

I would say if you're digging Tetsuko for the turns after your ninjas Ninjutsu, it might just be better to run Deepchannel Mentor. There's only 10 creatures in your current list that do not benefit from Deepchannel, while there's 16 that don't benefit from Tetsuko. Plus there's the added bonus of Deepchannel's CMC being a bit higher to give Yuriko's trigger a better punch when you reveal it.

That's a fair point. The hardest thing for me now is deciding the right mana curve. It plays just fine but I feel like I need to be hitting harder with her trigger. And most of my cuts have been higher CMC spells.

If you're willing to sacrifice your early game top-deck setup cards, there's some more expensive versions to up the curve like Aven Fateshaper and Inkfathom Divers

Soothsaying and Scroll Rack would generate so much value in just fixing you top deck and Doomsday and Insidious Dreams just wins you the game
