Commander Deck Help forum

Hey peeps.

Im new here and I'm starting Edh. I played a couple of brawl games and people at my Lgs suggested I try edh.

I'm looking for something not cedh but I still want the deck to pack a punch or two. My main want for the deck is to be able to play green. I love the ramping ability greens offer. My problem is that I don't like mono colered deck.

Maybe if someone could break down to me what // and do and are good for, it would really help me to pick a general. I don't wanna go for 3 colors and more because I don't have the money for an optimal 3 colored and more mana base.

Well, they do the same things in edh as they do elsewhere in mtg.

is about community: tokens, buffing the team, etc...

is the cycle of life and death: dumping cards into your gy and pulling things directly to the battlefield for loads of value.

is about the more primal aspects and against civilization: ramp into huge hasty creatures and destroy your opponent's creatures

is about growth and ingenuity: add counters to your things, get tons of draw and ramp to stay at the forefront of what is happening in the game.

Hopefully this helps!

To sum up the common archetypes much to simply:

GW: Tokens, Equipment, Lifegain, Hatebears

GB: Reanimator, Aristocrats

GR: Ramp, Stompy

GU: +1/+1 counters, Handsize matters, Ramp

Again those are just some of the more common things those colors can do. There are so many different things all of them can do depending on your commander of choice.

Sidenote any deck with green can ramp, I included it in blue and red versions since the gameplan involves ramping into large threats. The other colors could do this as well but its not usually the primary strategy.

First, I'd check EDHREC so you can see all the commanders in those colors

: A lot of token decks are here, with a few different side themes. For example, there's legendary tribal, equipment, cat tribal, etc.

: Mostly composed of Graveyard strategies but also dips into a few tribes like saprolings and elves.

: Ramp and stompy decks are generally popular, with some variation in things like Kicker decks or werewolf tribal.

: This is where you'll find the most variation. Main themes are usually +1/+1 counters but there are lots of different options like top deck matters or combo.

Deadpoo111 thanks. Do you have a recommendation for a new player in the format?

Hmm, I suppose if you want something easy you could try Hogaak, it's a really strong deck. Here's a super cheap one from mtg goldfish if you want to give it a shot: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-commander-hogaak-arisen-necropolis-25-50-100

In general, I would recommend either Green-Black or Green-Blue. Red and White are relatively lackluster colours in beginner EDH (Red fares poorly in multiplayer matchups; White can be competitive alongside other colours if you play Stax... But I'd avoid Stax if you are new to the format).

With Black-Green, you generally focus on graveyard shenanigans and killing your opponents' creatures. For a new player looking at , I would recommend Meren of Clan Nel Toth . Meren is great--she can be fun to play due to graveyard shenanigans, and is very forgiving since her resurrection ability mitigates bad block decisions or the like. Merene has a very high ceiling, so you can continue to upgrade her and have her be competitive as you grow as an EDH player.

has a whole host of great card-drawing commanders. Rashmi, Eternities Crafter would probably be my choice--she lets you "draw" an extra card each turn, sometimes even getting a free spell out of the deal. Again, Rashmi is a powerful general that will continue to be a solid option as you dive deeper into the format.

I would say for one good commander isn’t Kruphix, God of Horizons since it will let you keep all of your mana and is pretty hard to remove from the game.

I think saying Red and White are weak here is inaccurate. As mono colors yes but OP specifically requested a dual color deck involving Green. Both are great colors to splash, especially White with all of it’s exile based removal.

Xenagos was my first deck and gave me a great introduction to the format. If you like Stompy strategies, he wins games and is easy to build. He also does well on a budget, I think my original list was $30 sans Xenagos who I traded for.

Tatyova, Benthic Druid is a newer and cheaper commander that can be quite powerful. I have a Pauper EDH deck with her at the helm that can do some damage against real EDH decks.

Omnath, Locus of Rage my son's friend runs and it is quite strong and only gets expensive if you start looking for expensive lands. Most of the deck is just land search spells that put them on the battlefield to ramp out Omnath and then get tokens. It doesn't take many tokens to be a threat in this deck.

Hey, something to keep in mind is Simic will be the most expensive for a playable manabase. Gruul second, Selesnya third and Golgari would be the least expensive.

If budget is a concern then my advice is choose Golgari.

If optimizing your manabase, yes, but for two colors with access to land tutors in green, your deck is “playable” with 100% basics

Although popular archeypes in include token swarms, I would not discount the possibility of building a budget Voltron using Sigarda, Host of Herons as your commander. If that type of play interests you, I would be happy to recommand great unexpensive cards to create such a build.
