Golgari Guild Kit Commanders?

Commander Deck Help forum

Recently I got the Golgari Guild Kit, and I've been trying to make a commander deck from it. I've used Jarad, but I've also wondered about Izoni, or simply changing the deck strategy and making it a Savra deck. So does anyone have any tips about building a commander deck from this Guild Kit?

Savra is and excellent Golgari commander and not as over play as some. Having a Dictate of Erebos in the command zone can be ruthless. Combined with creatures like Ravenous Chupacabra you can pretty much keep your opponents creatures out of the battlefield.

I highly recommend Savra, Queen of the Golgari . Jarad tends to lean towards combo finishes, while Savra and her less-fun but better-known teammate Meren of Clan Nel Toth tend to be grindier, more about squeezing out every bit of value from your opponents. If you've played modern, I find these GB decks to operate on a similar style to Modern Jund - occasionally highly aggressive, occasionally a bit controlling, but typically interested in trading resources with your opponents, because you just. trade. better. always.

If you're interested, my decklist can be found here.

For the record, I've never tried Izoni as a commander, but she's very powerful as a part of the 99 under Savra, and I have to imagine she'd be quite strong at the head of a self-mill, self-sacrifice style graveyard build.

Merciless Executioner Plaguecrafter etc. Give you a double trigger and you can sacrifice them to their own ability Or sac a token and save them for blocking. Get a Blasting Station to add extra value damage Ashnod's Altar Phyrexian Altar probably a total of 6 to 8 sac outlets. Pitiless Plunderer for more mana. Green ramp spells, Blood Artist , Zulaport Cutthroat Vindictive Vampire Falkenrath Noble to drain and gain life. Whisper, Blood Liturgist and Hell's Caretaker are great sac/recursion. some creatures that etb and give you creatures tokens, such as Sengir Autocrat . Sanguine Bond if you want to further capitalize on the life gain. Torment of Hailfire to kick em while they are down. Smothering Abomination Sifter of Skulls Razaketh, the Foulblooded and that is mostly just the black part of the deck. The nice thing about Golgari is that there are a great deal of synergies between the legendary and dual coloured creatures to a point where a lot of them are playable in each other’s decks and when you sac a creature of both colours you receive both benefits from savra. A life gain sub theme or mass resurrection are both decent approaches. Buried Alive and Entomb are great! Well I’m sure that you probably were aware of most of these cards but hopefully these are useful to you. I will check back later to see who you chose as a commander. Cheers.

So you would think Savra would be the best commander?

It’s arguable whether or not Savra is the best, but for my personal taste, being that Grave Pact and Whip of Erebos are some of my favourite effects going back to my earliest playing days I am quite a fan of savra. In fact after this discussion I think I will find a home for her in my ghave deck.

I think Savra, Queen of the Golgari would be the way to build. Izoni, Thousand-Eyed is great in the 99, and will work well with a commander that wants to sac things anyways. As a commander, however, Izoni is tougher to make work. You have to really build around her, and if you truly want value out of her, you need to cast her more than once. There are a few ways to do this other than sending her back to the command zone, but paying 6 CMC each time you cast her tends to really limit the rest of a turn, and if you are recasting from the command zone, it doesn't take long for her CMC to get too far out of reach to make casting her again worth the effect.

Thanks. I'll try Savra, Queen of the Golgari when I make the deck, so I'm not sure how much 'sacrifice a creature' cards should i add. I've thought about 20, but I'm not sure. Thanks for the halp so far! :)

I have 16 sacrifice outlets in my deck, but I've found it's actually a little low on the effect and I'm thinking about adding more. 20 should work perfectly.
