Finalizing Kenrith/Angel 5c deck

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Dec. 12, 2020, 4:46 p.m. by CasualCucumber

Hi guys, I have been building my Kenrith deck for quite some time and I have come to a decklist I like. But I've never played a 5c deck, so I would love if any of you decklords have anything to comment on - from removal and card draw to the mana base. The deck is meant to be a somewhat budget build and more to the casual side.

A touch from the Gods

Any help will be appreciated!

budget 5c mana base? I'd run the entire cycle of tri-tap lands

It seems like a good idea but won't that many taplands be a problem?

Bleurgh. I built a perfectly fine 5-color manabase with 2 taplands with a very small budget. 10 taplands makes me want to vomit.

I'm going to throw out a wildly unpopular opinion here, but if you want to take a casual deck and make it a stronger casual deck, than fixing your mana base with the fewest amount of tap lands is probably one of the WORST ways to spend your money, and I'd focus on making sure the spells that you're casting count more when you do get to play them. This is especially true in a casual 5 color deck, where access to every spell in the game has to come with a cost, this one being a slower mana base. Unless your play group is actively trying to become more and more competitive, I personally feel that having a land enter tapped is a small price to pay for access to three colors. At literally about $1 or $2 MOST per card, I think that the tri-tap lands are the perfect solution to a CASUAL and BUDGET 5 color mana base.

Another suggestion to help you skimp on your mana base, running the cycle of signets. They ramp you, AND they fix you two colors, AND they're colorless, meaning you can cast any of them with any two lands in your hand

GenericToaster I mean, that's fair, but with Command Tower, Exotic Orchard, enemy painlands, enemy fastlands, some of the checklands, most of the BFZ Tango lands, the Reveal lands from SOI, and then you can start on Lorwyn Filters, OG Filters, and a couple other random cards, you can build a fully untapped manabase for no more than $1-3 per land. I mean, I did it, so I should know.

Of course it's not perfect. And yes, I'd recommend Signets and Arcane Signet to help it out. But an untapped manabase is a high priority and should be either the first thing or right after you get the core of your deck going that you do.
