Coming back after long break, what do I need to know?

Commander Deck Help forum

I used to play a ton of this game and use this site hella (I think at the peak of it I was like rank 35 user or whatever the system is) like four years ago. I'm getting back into it, mostly for EDH (do we still call it that or have we fully moved over to "commander"). So, if you've got a sec, what's been added that I need to know? Have the format rules changed? What are the new sweet cards? Other things? Again, mostly looking at casual EDH.

thx <3

Commander and EDH are pretty much interchangeable among the older people (aka me...).

This site is great for looking at what the internet has decided to use in their decks:

https://edhrec.com/

The card suggestions are average cards used. There are articles and podcasts/videos too.

For rules I tend to refer to this website:

https://mtg.gamepedia.com/Commander_(format)

Though this site is the official commander site like always

http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php

I don't think there have been any massive rule changes in that time?

lol. Welcome back!

This article provides an overview of major changes in the last few years.

Some cards were banned: Leovold, Emissary of Trest , Prophet of Kruphix , others... Protean Hulk was unbanned.

They changed the mulligan rule. They did away with the 'tuck' rule for commanders. What else... ?

The commander pre-cons have been up and down, but the 2016 set had 4-color commanders and is considered the best (maybe ever). It also introduced partner commanders. Decklists

For the sweet new cards, check out the decklists from the last few pre-cons, as well as the Masters sets ($$$) and Battlebond. Teferi's Protection is uh... pretty good.

Have fun!

I second using EDHREC. It's definitely the best community tool that has come of Commander's growing popularity. If you want to update your old decks, heading to the commander page for them will show you what the new consensus best cards are.

Best way to learn is to head to your local TCG Shop for Commander night and see what people are brewing. I personally tend to spend a long time in a single deck making tons and tons of adjustments to get it just right. Most people at my local store proxy their decks though so I’ve seen tons of new deck builds as a result.

And yes Teferi’s protection is a very good card. So is Noxious Revival.

I also second the notion of checking out the partner decks. They just have so much fun interaction with each other.
