Cascade or not ?

Commander Deck Help forum

Not sure the title is on point, but my inquiry has something to do with my cascade deck.

So, I have built my cascade deck about two weeks ago and I have had the feeling that it's missing something (Here's the list I am referring to Cascade).

The point of the deck is to play Apex Devastator and Genesis Ultimatum which are my two favorite cards at the moment, what I feel is missing is bigger monstrosities and just bigger threat in general, stuff like Zacama, Primal Calamity to untap all my lands and allowing me to cast more stuff or Gisela, Blade of Goldnight to double the damages and reduce the crack back when I swing out.

My friend told me I should switch my strategy to a Jodah, Archmage Eternal with a big mana theme and keep my cascade strategy and add Maelstrom Nexus so that even if my first spell does not have cascade, I will be able to get it.

Here are my two questions.

Would changing into a Jodah deck and mixing a big mana theme to a cascade theme really work? I am afraid that a big mana theme would require of me to play higher cmc spell and hinder the cascade side of the deck which requires cmc spells with lower values to cast them.

Other than the two other creatures I mentioned earlier and an Avacyn, Angel of Hope is there other cards with white and/or black I should think about integrating to the deck? Maybe Timesifter to go with all the high cmc spell I would add to the deck?

Found cascade works best with a lot of Scry or effects like Cream of the Crop or Scroll Rack so when you do cascade it's more just lining up the right spells rather than a random drop.

Just be aware things "put in play" with Genesis Ultimatum do not trigger cascade as they have not been "cast".

I could make a lot of suggestions, but it would be a lot easier for me to link my Ramos Cascade Ramp deck. Don't look too hard at the land base, as it's amazingly pricy, and not the important part anyway.

Even when I played Cascade in Modern, I found that 5-color was the way to go. It gives you a much more conclusive list of options for cascade spells. Take note of a few things when you look at it:

  • There are no infinite combos in the deck, and it really doesn't need them.

  • I didn't include all existing cascade spells, yet it's still a very sizeable theme.

  • There's a lot of utility in there, so there are cards for every situation you might find yourself in.

  • No counterspells, because they are dead spells on a cascade.

  • Since Ramos is my commander (and I could make the argument that he's the best option), I chose multicolored spells where in a few instances there are monocolored spells that do the same thing for less.

  • I have a delicate balance of draw, ramp, removal and bounce. The bounce is important, because it allows me to recast cascade creatures (and also, to occasionally recast Niv-Mizzet Reborn).

  • Finally, just so you know, I have recently updated the deck slightly, but haven't updated the list here. Mostly to add extra protection for Ramos.

For specific card recommendations, just read the list, but also read the comments. There are definitely some good suggestions that I didn't take.

Happy Gathering!
