Abzan combos

Commander Deck Help forum

Looking for some strong combos or locks in abzan colors that don't involve using the graveyard. I have plenty of graveyard combos in my deck and I am just looking for another way to win through graveyard hate.

Bonus points if it uses any cards I already have, especially if the combo can be Protean Hulk ed into.

lifemtg Gnarly combo, but it still sends primus to the graveyard long enough for it to be exiled. Thanks for the input though!

That’s a tricky one. I’ll have to research it when I’ve got time. Most Abzan combos tend to use the graveyard. I have a few non-graveyard combos in my deck, but they all involve Ghave, Guru of Spores who doesn’t exactly fit in your deck the way it’s built.

I will say, though, that Natural Order is as quick as Pattern of Rebirth for cheating out The Hulk . You might consider running it alongside pattern.

I’ll see if I can come up with some grave-free combos later today to help you circumvent the grave hate.

Simple little two card combo ive gotten rather fond of: Sun Titan paired with Kaya's Ghostform . Sun Titan basically becomes unkillable if the ghostform is on him. If he dies or is exiled (so this gets around grave hate) he comes right back and brings the ghost form with him. Plus each swing he gets in can get you incremental value from his effect. Basically your opponent needs to either exile the ghostform, then deal with the sun titan or exile them both simultaneously, in which case sun titan does come back but the ghostform stays gone. Its a very basic two card combo but works really really well. Plus both cards have high utility by themselves and ghostform helps with grave hate too

Would also suggest finding room for Eldritch Evolution

Abzkaban I have been considering adding Natural Order for some time now ( crash328 Eldritch Evolution too). I think i will test them both out for a bit soon and see how it goes.

As far as Kaya's Ghostform goes, that is a hard pass from me. It is a cute combo for sure, but it is disruptable with a Relic of Progenitus , Deathrite Shaman , etc... I have enough graveyard combos as it is.

Squirrelcraft doesn't use the graveyard, so Squirrel Nest and Earthcraft ?

GhostChieftain says... #9

Gidgetimer I love squirrelcraft for the memes, but I don't have many basics left in deck and I am trying to get more fetches whenever I can so earthcraft is pretty dead and squirrel nest is too slow to be any good for me without earthcraft online. I like where your head is at though

Here are some ideas in Abzan colors that don't use the graveyard. I don't know how useful they would be in your deck, but here they are:

  1. Spike Feeder + Archangel of Thune / Sunbond = Infinite life and an / Spike Feeder
  2. Midnight Guard + Presence of Gond = Infinite tokens
  3. Conspiracy + Turntimber Ranger = Infinite tokens
  4. Conspiracy + Restoration Angel + Soul Warden / Essence Warden = Infinite Life
  5. Conspiracy + Restoration Angel + Cathars' Crusade = Infinite +1/+1 counters
  6. Conspiracy + Restoration Angel + Death Match = Board wipe that gets around indestructible
  7. Conspiracy + Restoration Angel + Genesis Chamber = Infinite Tokens
  8. Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond / Vizkopa Guildmage = Drain the board
  9. Tainted Remedy + Beacon of Immortality = Kill target opponent

Like I said, I don't know how many of these will be relevant in your deck, but they're some ideas.

Sid_the_sloth

That combo uses the graveyard. We're looking for abzan combos that don't use the graveyard at all.

In any case, check out my deck for better combos involving Ghave, Guru of Spores .

Abzkaban Love the conspiracy combos. I wont ever run them in this deck, but conspiracy is such a fun card. As I assumed unfortunately, I may need to just try to get elesh norn beats in if my yard is unusable. I really appreciate you for coming up with so many options, even if they won't quite fit my strategy.

Yeah I figured those might be a stretch. Really with Karador your whole deck revolves around your graveyard. Removal will go a long way for getting rid of grave hate, too. Good luck!

You have access to all the elf based combos but most will require too much of a change to include. However, Vizer Of Remedies and Devoted Druid go infinite, they also have the added bonus of vizer working with any persist creatures you want

How does that involve the grave yard?? Pay one remove a counter make a 1/1 pay one sac it (token goes to grave yard tech sure but any disruption to the grave heard doesnt stop anything) When the creatire dies you trigger lumberknot put a counter on him and the ghave ability you put the counter back on ghave....repeat so how is that grave yard??

I know this dosent involve the graveyard but you could use blazing archon+ indestructible and hexproof effect to prevent all combat damage

I'm still blown away how the two combos I listed involve the grave yard lol Nothing with grave yard interactions stops both combo. It goes off regardless

June 19, 2019 2:32 p.m.

Sid_the_sloth you are right, they really don't use it. I have no idea why he said it did. Either way, they are not quite what I want simply due to the fact that to actually utilize either of them well I would have to change my deck almost entirely. Thanks though!

June 19, 2019 2:44 p.m.

Vizer Of Remedies ? Inf mana with devoted Druid and inf combo with a sac outlet and anything with persist

June 19, 2019 4:29 p.m.

SP3CTR3_chelts that is a good combo, but I will probably wait on that til I decide to run thrasios/tymna so I have an outlet for that mana. It doesn't do much for my deck to have infinite mana honestly.

On the ghave topic... can he be used as a junk tokens general as in his abilities are good for that or do people mainly use him so they can use his colors for a combo deck.
