Writing Articles

The Blind Eternities forum

I'm looking to write some articles (Mainly MTG and Keyforge), but I'm having trouble where to start. First, would I have to send an email to the site I want to write for (so I have a chance of landing something)? Second, is writing articles for said sites paid at all? Any other advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

I think you need to research the sites individually, many have different setups, and I don't think there is one law that rules all of them.

Good luck though!

SynergyBuild: I was going to focus specifically for EDH. I looked up the career listings, and article writing wasn't mentioned, which is why I made the post in the first place. I wasn't sure where to sign up, so to speak.

I am not sure of many places that need to hire, sadly. I think is is a niche enough field there probably aren't any more spots to fill.

SynergyBuild: THat was my worst fear. I'm not even sure where to turn to now.

Just start making content right now. You can put it all on this website at first if you don't have another platform. The only way to get a job doing magic content creation is to have a portfolio of that kind of work to show to site editors. Just start writing articles even if they don't get read at all. Once you have enough good work to show off, just send some samples to Magic sites. There's always an email address somewhere of someone in charge to send stuff to. Good luck.

Rzepkanut: I'll get started once I get back from my break from MTG, which will be in time for War of the Spark, in that case.

I think you need to find a niche community to start with. Not like... all formats, or limited/constructed specifically, but maybe budget magic, block constructed, lore, gameplay improvement, etc. Pick something you are interested in that doesn't already have 50 great people in the field, and try to get a following.

From there you can branch out, but stick with your community to not upset them or anything. That is about all of the advice I can say for that, as it is what I have seen of other successful writers, however I can't for sure it would work. I am certainly not a writer myself.

Good luck!

SynergyBuild: I was hoping to go into EDH, but build decks using a random function (Like the one on Gatherer or EDHRec). Something EDH-related at least.

I know both casual and competitive edh are pretty rare, you usually see the 75% stuff. I haven't ever seen "building with what you have" where you talk about how to make decks from draft chaff or something. Or how to make the top tier lists on a budget, idk.

Keyforge is a good idea, now that we are rolling into the new set in a few months.

Additionally, I would say for MTG, write whatever you want - I have written Pauper articles, canadian highlander articles and even an intro to keyforge post, which all gained some traction.

There are a lot of people on this very site to aid you on your writing quest and acquiring a portfolio is a good place to start indeed.

Boza: I would definitely be up for writing Keyforge articles, especially since it's much newer. Problem is, I don't know where to begin.

SynergyBuild: I feel like building with what you have would be too easy for me (I have an extensive collection), and I lean on the casual side of the spectrum. I've seen an article series on Random EDH decks, but the author brings out a new one once in a blue moon, so I thought to make that a weekly thing.

No, like teaching others to build with their (presumably smaller) collections.

SynergyBuild: I'm starting to see what you mean. So focus not on the cards themselves, but the categories in which they fall under?

Just like a start. I was just saying how to speak to the casual crowd.

SynergyBuild: Maybe I could combine the two ideas. Pick a random option (maybe start with mono-colored decks), then go from there with your idea.

Seems too specific, maybe 2 series that are separate? One for each idea?

SynergyBuild: Perhaps. I'll do that then. A short-term series and a long-term one seems good.
