Maybeboard

Greetings all,

I originally built this deck with the idea of just running a bunch of clones and copying all of my opponents things and being able to run Seedborn Muse, as i missed the run of the almighty Prophet of Kruphix. However, it evolved into much more than just a simple simic clone deck. What I ended up with was a strong control deck that ran loads of creatures and doesn't care about board wipes. I've slowly tweaked it until I felt it was perfect for what I wanted it to do. It's built with the "75%" rule in mind.

One of the things i love about Zegana and i think it's something most people over look is how much evasion she has. Don't see it? Let me explain.

While she is devoid of conventional evasion like flying or hexproof, her abilities are basically built in evasion. When you cast her, you draw loads of cards, this makes her especially difficult to deal with. If a player kills her, you can then recast her to draw more and get more advantage. If they leave her in play she is often a large creature (often a 7/7 or bigger) which makes her a 2 or 3 turn clock due to commander damage. There are ways to deal with her without removing her from the battlefield, it makes her a constant threat and makes her a very difficult threat to play around. This is why i love her so much.

Rules/Themes for the build: * No Exile * No Graveyard Hate * No Free Spells * No Possession effects (Treachery/Drake) * No Infinite Combos * No Land Destruction/MLD (Off chance with Acidic Slime) * Minimal Tutors * Minimal Salt inducing Cards

As it explains below, this deck is a love letter to David McDarby and Danny West, the original Pioneers of Star City Games Commander Vs series. So cards they used, I stuck with, and have tweaked and updated since then. In that fashion, this deck is built during a simpler time in Commander. Where the games were slower, longer and you played some janky things cause they were fun.

How to Pilot:

This deck functions best mid to late game. Spend as much of your early game as possible, drawing cards and ramping mana. When you are in a good position, you want to try and get Alchemist's Refuge and Seedborn Muse into play. This will allow you to start taking control of the board. Play Zegana when you have a large creature in play, in order to refill your hand. Getting Kruphix into play also starts to seal the deal.

With Seedborn and Kruphix you can float tons of colorless mana to cheapen all of your spells. It doesn't take long to accrue a critical mass of mana.

Once you have established a control hold. Try to resolve a beater like Koma, Frost Titan, Overbeing of Myth, or clone some other powerhouse. Then Kick Rite of Replication to finish the game. You can kill with Commander Damage or use Stormtide Leviathan or Vorinclex to finish things off as well. Though I have yet to actually kill with Zegana. This deck is loaded with a ton of options.

While there is only 1 board wipe in this deck, in the form of Cyclonic Rift, I have never needed more. The deck simply draws so many cards that it will usually find it or a tutor to get it. With Eternal Witness, Clones, Deadeye Navigator and Season's Past. Reoccurring Rift, or any other spell is often very easy. Use Deadeye on Venser or Mystic Snake to create a "soft counter lock". This lock firms up with Seadborn Muse in play. The deck also runs a number of targetted removal spells which serve to eliminate key problems from opponents. But, you should save them to advance your board state. There are exceptions to this rule, but, you should only think about using a removal or counter if it advances your position.

Even though this is a creature based deck. It rarely cares about board wipes. I have never felt like ive lost my board or ive lost ground when someone wipes the board. Most of the creatures are in here as fodder. They have an ETB effect that gives me advantage then they die as a blocker. But the main reason i dont care is the high amount of grave interaction this deck has. It doesn't seem like it with only using Seasons Past and Eternal Witness. But when you factor in Clones, Twincast, Deadeye Navigator. I can reuse my goodies 3 and 4 times some games.

Fun Tricks:

Once you get a resolved Seedborn Muse and Alchemist's Refuge in play. I love to use my Clones as additional counterspells. Resolve a Mystic Snake or Vensor then use a clone to copy it, flashing it in using Alchemist's Refuge.

Another fun one i do is use Clones to Copy Zegana. The clone comes in with 1 more counter than the original Commander. I draw a ton of cards, then sent Zegana back to the commander zone. This allows me to recast her for MORE CARDS! This should really be named Card Draw the Deck...

For those interested. Inspiration for this deck came from my favorite episode of Commander Vs from Star City Games. Its a rough shell of Danny West's Zegana deck (tweaked and changed greatly over time) with the clone aspect from David McDarby.
