You'll Wish You Had One With Nothing: A Breakdown

My very first serious commander deck that sadly I’ve taken apart was a Kami of the Crescent Moon deck. The deck was a Group Slug style deck that mostly won through copying the card Viseling with Rite of Replication, Mechanized Production, and many other copy spells. Eventually, I started looking into other fun cards that have similar effects to viseling, cards like Storm Seeker and Sudden Impact. When I first saw these cards, I knew I wanted to build a deck where these "Hand Burn" spells can be the stars.

My first attempt at a Hand Burn build was a Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis deck. It used big creatures like Multani, Maro-Sorcerer, Maro, and Adamaro, First to Desire. It also used all of the same Hand Burn spells you see in this current deck. And lastly the deck used cards that slowed every player down, cards like Rule of Law and Arcane Laboratory.

This first build attempt was horrible and slow and didn't feel right. For a long time it was missing something. I took all the cards from the build and set them aside. I waited until a new commander option came out. And that's when I saw this glorious gem Xyris, the Writhing Storm. When Xyris initially leaked I knew right away ... Xyris, the Writhing Storm will lead this deck.

As apart of my playgroups budget challenge, this deck cannot exceed $50 (average tcgplayer price). Please do not suggest any cards over $5.

This deck used to be a $600 deck, lately my playgroup has been getting more and more interested in budget builds, so here we are. If you want to see the expensive version i've linked that build here here.

In my opinion this budget version is more fun to play!

It's less of a "win more" deck. In the expensive version once I got phyrexian altar on board with Xyris out, it was basically gg.

First, the goal is to get Xyris, the Writhing Storm on the board, bonus points if you can equip Lightning Greaves.

Once Xyris is on board, the next step is to create snakes from combat and wheels with cards like Magus of the Wheel or Molten Psyche. If you cannot wheel right away for slower (yet still effective) results use cards like Fevered Visions and Kami of the Crescent Moon.

Once snakes are on board it is time to convert these snakes into mana with cards like Battle Hymn,Jaheira, Friend of the Forest and Xenagos, the Reveler or cast other ways to generate quick mana with cards like Inner Fire, Mana Geyser, Rousing Refrain, and Seething Song

After that fill opponents hands with cards like Prosperity, Skyscribing, Fascination, and Tales of the Ancestors. Once the hands are full cast and copy something like Sudden Impact to deal a boat load of damage.

These are cards that I am currently noodling on and seriously considering adding to the deck.
