Yawgmoth Primer

  • This is my first attempt at writing up a full on primer for any of my edh decks... which will be my practice run for when i do the same for my monoblack rublacks kube.
  • so, Yawgmoth himself, is the core of nearly everything this deck wants to do. Creature elimination, draw and sometimes proliferate.
  • The deck revolves around creating engines of recyclable sacrifices on our creatures. Most notably those with the undying keyword.
  • the primer may mention a lot of cards i don't currently have in the main list... that's mostly because i just don't have some of them yet, like phyrexian altar. when i actually get something i want in the list, it will be added in. for now they remain in the ideas of the primer for where the deck is going.
What that means for this deck, with its higher content of aristocrat style cards is as follows...
  1. we generate a lot of hand advantage off of creatures that can be replayed from the graveyard or just come back naturally via undying (maybe even persist at some point but not likely)
  2. our “aristocrat” creatures help us either, sustain our life with the gains from creatures dying, or help us win by hurting our opponents when our creatures die etc. i.e. the classic Blood Artist, will gain us 1 life to mitigate the 1 life cost of sacrificing a creature to Yawgmoth for his ability while harming one other opponent. so that we may continue to do our thing without killing ourself. the more of these aristocrat style creatures on the field, the faster and more beneficial every creature death is for us.
  3. the ability to place a -1/-1 counter on a creature allows us to cancel out the +1/+1 counter that undying creatures place on themself, which in turn, lets us keep using them with the undying ability. this generally will require us to have access to desecrated tomb, genesis chamber, Nest of scarabs or most likely 2 undying creatures. Sacrifice the undying, place a minus counter on a creature, it returns to play with a plus counter. sacrifice another creature to place a minus counter on the undying creature eliminating its plus counter, sacrifice the undying creature again... with an aristocrat out to maintain your life total you can repeat this process as much as needed to end the game in no time.
  4. once you acquire particular forms of mana generation, like Phyrexian Altar, Ashnod’s Altar, Pitiless Plunderer, Carnival of Souls or even a Skirge Familiar... there is 100% chance of you ended the game before you kill yourself. as you will be able to fill your hand and mana pool to activate an end game.
  5. “Reassembling” from our graveyard is a slightly alternate route we might use for something like Reassembling Skeleton should we have the mana generation available rather than an undying creature loop. This may require having multiple sources in play, like Pitiless Plunderer, Phyrexian Altar, Ashnod’s Altar, Carnival of Souls, Revel in Riches or Skirge Familiar to maintain whatever the cost of recasting the creature is.
  • Game Ending Play Lines:
  • 2 undying creatures and Yawgmoth, aristocrat to sustain
  • 1 undying, Genesis Chamber / Nest of Scarabs
  • 1 “Reassembler” and Pitiless Plunderer, Revel in Riches, Skirge Familiar, Pawn of Ulamog, Sifter of Skulls, Carnival of Souls, Phyrexian Altar, Ashnod’s Altar in any combination of enough mana generation for any kind of creature you can cast from the graveyard. tag on an aristocrat and get it over with :)
  • Nest Of Scarabs on its own with Yawgmoth is a super simple engine to assemble with any aristocrat to just go to endgame.
  • You could potentially if you are lacking an aristocrat, you could use some mana generation after playing the Ichor Rats and just push all opponents to 10 poison counters and end it that way with surplus cards in hand.
  • Tech Card Choices:
  • Removal: i took preference on cards that could be played for no mana, whether at the cost of a card from my hand or life. this just allows me options to deal with things and play my cards early on as well.
  • Draw: I chose either the lowest cost sorceries for 2 cards, or instant speeds, but a card that said “target player” would take priority over a card that only said “you draw”
  • Good Stuff: Bolas Citadel just takes the cake on value for a deck like this where i can constantly change the top card with yawgmoth.
  • Other Stuff: 1.Psychosis Crawler, just synergizes off my draw for an ender; 2.Fleshwrither can grab a good handful of my creatures of varying type from the deck directly into play avoiding counter magic responses; 3.Manascape Reflector is really a kind of tech for my meta, giving me benefit off my opponents fancy lands or duplicating one of mine; 4.Grave Consequences, while being mostly just a single draw, also allows me thew option to punish graveyard decks really hard.

More to be added later as i learn more about making an effective primer.

  1. i tried figuring out the html to list all the possible combos and i broke it so i gave up
  2. so yawgmoth and any two undying or 1 undying and genesis chamber/blowfly to keep the +1/+1 off the undying creature so it can keep being sacked
  3. cauldron familiar, witch's oven, clock of omens and pitiless plunderer... sac cat, make a food and treasure, tap them with clock to untap witch's oven, sac food to reanimate cat. repeat
  4. urborg and kormus bell... all lands are now 1/1s and you kill them with yawgmoth. pew pew
  5. nest of scarabs and yawgmoth is the most straightline combo with any of the aristo cars to keep you from dying as you kill everything and draw everything.
  6. will probably add in mindcrank and bloodchief at some point cause its self sufficient with all my aristocrats

Updates Add

added first version of a primer for this deck in it's evolving stages. once the deck cracks a certain value point it won't be considered budget anymore in comparison to other popular yawg lists... but i'll notate that in updates when it happens.
