Xenagos, God of Heavy Hitters

Commander / EDH* Infect Multiplayer RG (Gruul)

Sideboard

Gruul get win. ~15 ramp spells and ~11 card draw spells to hopefully keep the engine running. Then just run'em over.

29.5.2017.

Trying out 1 drop mana dorks instead of 2 mana ramp spells like before. The plan is to hit a 1 drop dork into a 3 drop ramp spell and be able to cast Xenagos on turn 3 and then swing in on turn 4 with a huge 6 mana beater. If this doesn't work I'll switch to the old plan of land ramping.

The deck has been having consistent success. It's a Tier 1 deck in my playgroup (which means that it doesn't play any tutors or infinte combos, Tier 0 is the "everything goes" tier). I'm seeing just how amazing extra combat steps are in the deck and have added Relentless Assault and will be adding more cards like it in the future, namely Seize the Day and Scourge of the Throne. I've been disappointed with how Zendikar's Resurgence and Champion of Rhonas have been performing and decided to cut them for Sandstone Oracle and the aforementioned Relentless Assault. This deck mostly wants to put down one and only one threat every turn after turn 4-5. Taking a turn off at that time to play Zendikar's Resurgence accomplishes nothing but put a big target on your head while giving no immediate value. Champion of Rhonas looks like it should be great and it's ok... but I want to put down my threats before combat not after and so it's value has gone down in my eyes. I'd also like to add in Momentous Fall for Lifecrafter's Bestiary since the Pokédex does not really do much in this deck. I'm quite happy with the deck at the moment and it's great to lend to a friend who hasn't played much MTG/EDH since it's so straight forward.

30.1.2018. Made the following changes:

Void Winnower -> Scourge of the Throne

Lifecrafter's Bestiary -> Momentous Fall

Darksteel Ingot -> Selvala, Heart of the Wilds

Ezuri's Predation -> Reforge the Soul

Insurrection -> Blood Sun

Rapacious One -> Seize the Day

Finally upgraded the deck with some cards I've been wanting to add for a looong time, like Selvala, Seize the Day and Scourge of the Throne. I'm still waiting on a couple of cards and will update accordingly. Blood Sun will probably be quite nice since a lot of people in my playgroup play utility lands.

15.5.2018. Made the following changes:

Kazandu Refuge -> Scavenger Grounds

Blightsteel Colossus -> Putrefax

Sneak Attack -> Triumph of the Hordes

Genesis Wave -> Priest of Titania

Traverse the Outlands -> Carpet of Flowers

Blood Sun -> Malignus

I'm a little sad to see some of these cards go like the huge ramp spells and Blighsteel but I wanted to try a leaner version of the deck that can pressure opponents even faster. Some of the cards above might make it in again at a later date.

27.8.2018

Elvish Piper -> Aggravated Assault. The deck has now an infinite combo. Elvish Piper doesn't do a lot in this build since no creatures really cost more than 6-7 cmc and you normally don't want to flood the board with bombs.

20.12.2018

Phyrexian Hydra -> Grothama, All-Devouring

Putrefax -> Eldritch Evolution

Took these bad boys out. Trying out other things. Excited to see how Grothama goes.

30.4.2019

Managorger Hydra -> Ghalta, Primal Hunger

Elemental Bond -> Forest

I feel like elemental bond is too slow and I'll add in a Magus of the Wheel instead later on. Until then, the deck could really use an extra land. Also I got a sweet promo Ghalta and had to find a spot for it!

13.7.2020

Hunter's Insight -> Elemental Bond

Harrow -> Nature's Lore

Garruk's Uprising is a much better card than Elemental Bond since it can easily cantrip, gives the same effect and grants trample which is huge for this deck. Nature's Lore is a little better as well since the 3 mana slot is very packed atm.

17.7.2020

Harmonize -> Heroic Intervention

Beast Within -> Nature's Claim

Steel Hellkite -> Elder Gargaroth

20.8.2020

Momentous Fall -> Forest. Needed more green mana in the deck

Evolutionary Leap -> Worldspine Wurm. Natural Order target and a dream card I've been waiting to put in for a long time!
