Whisperer in Darkness

Commander / EDH Mono-Black

McGotto

Sideboard

Creature recursion on a grand scale.

This deck relies on ETB and triggered effects to remove creatures or force opponents to sacrifice them, while still building your own.

Sheoldred, Whispering One's ability is pivotal, but not crucial for success. Get her out once you can defend her, and hit opponents with her for commander damage. Don't worry about opponents with life gain, as she will normally beat them with 3-4 hits. Other commander options to mix it up a bit are Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, Ob Nixilis, Unshackled or Kokusho, the Evening Star. Just in case people start hating on Sheoldred.

Thief of Blood is in the deck to deal with other decks that rely on counters (hydra decks!). Consume the Meek is very effective against token creature decks, and is necessary since they can often produce enough creatures to effectively ignore your commander. Sheoldred, Whispering One will not be ignored!

The weakness this deck has is against anything that isn't a creature. It is terrible at reacting to spells being cast, enchantments, and artifacts. It relies on ripping creatures out from under opponents' decks, and has enough creature removal to aggravate virtually any other deck. Another weakness is that it draws A LOT of hate from other players. Really. A lot.

So the fun of this is two-fold. I often shut down any player's deck if they need creatures to win. I also get to play black as black was meant to be played - with lots of creatures going in and out of the graveyard.

This deck has a remarkable ability to produce the mana it needs. With luck, I can have Sheoldred, Whispering One on the board on turn three. It's not uncommon for this deck to run high enough on mana that I can cast anything I need each turn, resulting in Exsanguinate for a win. Many of the high CMCs are offset by several items that can make permanents cheap or free to play. I've avoided "X" spells, as I hate to lose them to my own Omen Machine.

Most creatures have effects that synergize with the commander to reduce opposition.
