Introduction

Backstory (For Zestiness)

Black was my very first favorite color when getting into the game of Magic. It's able to do almost everything (usually with a cost involved) that the other colors do, and also can tutor cards. I had collected many black cards throughout my time playing the game, with no use for the cards. I wanted to build a mono-black commander ever since I delved into the realms of EDH, but after around two years I didn't know who should be at helm.

Enter Horobi (Insert Metallica Reference Here)

Horobi, Death's Wail is one of the many overlooked commanders in the Kamigawa block, but he has such a cool effect. Making voltron strategies null, and making many normally overlooked cards playable, I realized he's a very fun commander and I had a majority of the cards for the core of the deck available. Building the deck was no problem, as most of the deck was in my collection.

Strategy

Control the board with Horobi's ability and other board wipes that black has to offer. There's some life drain to help you actually win through attrition. This deck is meant to be mostly annoying, but winning is also somewhat important.

Budget/Suggestions

Currently, the maximum budget is around $70, but feel free to suggest any cards that you think may help the deck more. Suggestions for solid win conditions would be great as well. Revel in Riches is a card I considered a while ago as an easy win condition, so I may add it back in.

Interactions with Horobi

• This isn't mono blue for Dramatic Reversal and Isochron Scepter shenanigans, but this card imprinting Touch of Darkness is instant-speed board wipes for {2}

• With enough Devotion and Horobi out, Mogis's Marauder basically reads: "When this card enters the battlefield, your opponents sacrifice {X} target creatures, where {X} is your devotion to black." You can get a minimum of three cards sacrificed with him.

• Unspeakable Symbol is instant-speed Murder for 3 life.

• Tetzimoc, Primal Death makes for {B} Murders on my turn.

Winning

There aren't many means of winning, where this deck struggles at. There's setting a 20-turn clock with Palace Siege or Retreat to Hagra (assuming you'll hit all your land drops). I guess having your opponents run out of resources to fight back and beating face with Horobi and creatures works. I need a Revel in Riches in this!

Strengths

This deck is very strong against creature-based and voltron strategies, and does a great job of controlling the board.

Weaknesses

...how are you gonna win with all that control?

No but seriously this deck struggles against other control decks or decks with a low creature count. Especially with the lack of counter spells to fend off opposing ones.
