"Belial! Behemoth! Beelzebub! Asmodeus! Satanas! Lucifer!"

"Since dawn of time the fate of man is that of lice.
Equal as parasites and moving without eyes.
A day of reckoning when penance is to burn.
Countdown together now and say the words, that you will learn
"

In any compelling story, there is a sense of good, and a sense of evil. Magic the Gathering is no different. For fifteen years, one character in the lore of MtG stood above all others as the epitome of that terrifying evil force. His name? Yawgmoth. "The Ineffable. The Father of Machines. The Lord of the Wastes." Over the course of twenty-five plus years, we got card after card referencing this almighty terror, but we never saw the man, and we never got the legendary creature card that this Behemoth of a character deserved. That all changed with Modern Horizons. Along with some nerd who builds cheap little baubles, we FINALLY got the card that we should have had for years. We got Yawgmoth, Thran Physician.

When I first saw him, I saw the potential to build something truly devastating. But, time passed, and I sat him aside, focusing on lesser characters and losing sight of the majesty that lie before me. That all changed when I began to listen to the band Ghost. I'm the type of person who relates all aspects of my life to music, including Magic. I have an ever growing playlist of songs that I associate with my various commander decks, for one reason or another, and enjoy using the inspiration of the songs to help bring the decks to life for myself and my playgroup. For instance, another one of my commander decks is Brago, King Eternal, who's anthem is "Hail to the King" by Avenged Sevenfold. When that song starts to play, my friends groan and sigh, knowing that they are in for a long, painful game. Enter Ghost. As I began to listen to more and more of their music, songs like "He Is," "Majesty," and "Faith" all began to click as possible anthems for Yawgmoth, and I began the great work of "compleating" a Yawgmoth deck. Then I started to go a little bit farther back in their catalog, and lo and behold "Year Zero". "Year Zero" (see above) is a song that I just saw more and more to embody what I wanted Yawgmoth to become, and what I wanted to instill into this deck. I felt that as Yawgmoth is essentially the "Lucifer" of Magic: The Gathering (i.e. the Big Bad), this powerful track would help to perpetuate the aura of this deck. "You are up against the devil himself, and you are nothing more than an insect that he will crush underfoot on his way to victory. He will bring the world that you knew to its end, and bring about his new order, and with it, Year Zero."
""He will tremble the nations.
Kingdoms to fall one by one.
Victim to fall for temptations;
A daughter to fall for a son
The ancient serpent deceiver,
to masses standing in awe
He will ascend to the heavens,
Above the stars of God"

Welcome, Year Zero is the culmination of my efforts to build a deck truly deserving of Yawgmoth. I focused on acquiring and implementing as many cards as possible that would bring Phyrexia on Earth to my opponents, while staying on task of keeping it competitive and ruthless. This deck will bring a new order to my playgroup. They will learn to accept their fate, and to "Welcome Year Zero".
