Creature (1)

The very first deck I built was a red-green (back then there was no such thing as "Gruul") beast tribal deck. This was during the back in about 2003, and ever since beasts have had a place in my heart. My deck changed slightly over time -- changing Krosan Colossus for Kalonian Behemoth -- the core of the deck hasn't changed. This was a legacy deck, and recently I've wanted to introduce this deck into the EDH / Commander format. So, without further ado, and with all the love I have for beast tribal, let me introduce you to

Welcome to the Rampage

In EDH, the decision to go from Gruul to Naya was mostly driven by my love of certain Cat Beast cards, but also for some extra flexibility. Also, . Mayael the Anima was almost the commander due to her ability, and she may have a place in this deck, but eventually I decided to have a beast rule the rampage.

Please note that all these comments are, of course, my own opinion.

Marath, Will of the Wild is the commander of this deck. A 3-mana 3/3 whose power actually increases with the commander tax is very attractive, but also due to the ability to buff other beasts on the field.

Naturally, there's also the infinite combo of Ashnod's Altar + Illusionist's Bracers + Marath, Will of the Wild (go to https://edhrec.com/combos/rgw/4662 for a more eloquent explanation):

  1. First, ensure all cards are on the battlefield along with Illusionist's Bracers attached to Marath, Will of the Wild. Marath must have at least 3 +1/+1 counters on it with available to you.
  2. Use to create two 1/1 green Elemental creature tokens (two because of Illusionist's Bracers.
  3. Sacrifice a creature to Ashnod's Altar, preferable one of the tokens, to get . You have one token remaining.
  4. Use and remove one +1/+1 counter from Marath to add one +1/+1 counter on Marath. Because of the Bracers, add another +1/+1 counter on Marath. Marath is now 3/3.
  5. Repeat 2-4 ad nauseum.

After steps 2-4, you are left with and one 1/1 green Elemental creature token more than you started. You can repeat those steps as much as you want, spending the to get more elementals. Then, you can sacrifice all your elementals to get near-infinite colourless mana (and use it on, I dunno, Fireball or something), buff Marath or another creature immensely, or simply attack with a near-uncountable number of tokens.

So mostly this deck is composed of beast cards that I've found over the years and I love. I will highlight some of those here just to explain a little why I chose them, and why I love them.

  • Laccolith Titan was the first beast card I owned. Its ability to deal damage as blockers are being declared made it very fast at killing opponents, even faster than those with first strike!
  • Tephraderm was another one of my first beasts; as a kid I would call it the "no u" creature.
  • With its cheap Morph, Hystrodon very often manages to get its ability through at least once.
  • Krosan Colossus was a 9/9 creature for symbol:6GGG at a time when anything bigger than a 6/6 was considered mind-blowing! (At least in my circle of friends!)
  • Last but not least, I cannot count the number of times Rhox has won me the game.

Many of the cards in this deck, such as Wirewood Savage or AEther Charge, have obvious synergy with the rest of the deck. However, I'd like to point out some cards which don't look to have any obvious synergy, and explain why they're in.

  • Felidar Sovereign is one of the few good white beasts, and I add it there as a distraction. I don't actually intend to win with this card, but it can be a great way to draw attention away from other beefy beasts.

  • Horizon Stone is used to stockpile mana for Marath's ability or Fireball.
  • I love Armadillo Cloak because for symbol:1GW, having +2/+2 + trample + lifelink is hilarious to me.
  • Barge In is a surprise tool in case you get some beefy beasts blocked by wimpy creatures.
  • With that, thank you for looking over my deck, and any suggestion or comment is appreciated!
