Happy Birthday to Me! —Feb. 5, 2019

I decided to reward myself, with something on my Wishlist, for this year's birthday - Am a proud owner of a Cruel Tutor now.

Added

  1. Cruel Tutor - Strengthens my "Tutors Arsenal", tutoring to the top of library synergizes well with Yennett's ability.

Removed

  1. Insidious Dreams - While this won me a few games, the need to discard cards makes it restrictive.

Love the deck but I feel it needs more lands I would never draw a 3 land hand with only 35 lands maybe up it to 38-40

BlakeLeask thanks for the suggestion. I started with slightly more lands too but progressively replaced some with rocks (currently running 13 ramp) to accelerate the deck and allow me to drop Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign early.

It's a delicate balance so am still refining it. Do play test the deck on T/O and let me know what you think.

Give me a +1 too if you like how it runs. Cheers!

Since it seems you have a pretty unlimited budget here, lemme give you some budgetless suggestions ;)

Transmute Artifact is pretty much a strict upgrade over Reshape (though you could run both). It costs less mana, doesn't make you pay until resolution, and if it's countered you don't lose the sacrificed artifact.

I know it's on your maybeboard, but if you get the $$$, I'd absolutely run Imperial Seal over Liliana Vess, since you don't seem to get much benefit from her non-tutoring modes. While she lets you tutor twice, the significant decrease in cost seems very relevant. If you want to run both, my first cut would be Not Forgotten.

With 13 mana rocks, have you considered Paradox Engine as another way to cast those expensive spells you're trying to hit with your commander?

Hope this helps! :)

Daedalus19876 Thanks for your suggestions.

I agree with everything you said except one point - I do have a limited budget. ROFLOLMAOMG!

I've included Transmute Artifact into my wish list, and I'd continue to wish for it (if my friends are reading this...cough... my next birthday... cough... present please... cough).

Given a choice, I'd run both Imperial Seal and Liliana Vess, the latter's 2 cards tutor (before she runs out of loyalty) is extremely useful in helping me set up my combo pieces and try to win from there. That said, as mentioned in my Primer, this being a creatureless deck means I've very limited ways of protecting her from combat damage, apart from Yennett herself.

Good point on Paradox Engine too.

Keep the ideas flowing. Hope you like how this deck runs too! Cheers.

I obviously didn't upvote. Well, I do have a suggestion: Mystic Confluence might be pretty cool here, no matter if cast from hand or off of yennett

seshiro_of_the_orochi Thanks for your suggestion.

Mystic Confluence was in the earlier version of this deck as it's a good and versatile card.

After play testing, here're some of my thoughts on the card:

As a Counterspell - is expensive for a counterspell.

As a Removal - With Flying and Menance on Yennett, I don't often see the need to remove potential blockers. Devastation Tide and Tragic Arrogance are better at dealing with threats.

As a Card Draw - This deck values Tutors and Top of Library Manipulation over card draw.

In view of the above, I ended up taking the card out.

Sounds like a well reasoned decision. On the other hand, a counter or bounce that draws two cards at instant speed is fine.

Draw two as an instant is Hieroglyphic Illumination . The counter is Mana Leak , the bounce is Unsummon . So the counter is above curve, the bounce on curve. Still, I understand your reasoning.

seshiro_of_the_orochi I enjoy discussions like this as it forces me to think long and hard on my card choices.

Keep the ideas flowing!

Great deck list, super similar to my Intet deck as well! So +1 for that! Aside from that the only thing I can possibly think of is just Silence so your turn you go off is interrupted or that you can stop a person's turn when they attempt to go off. All my other cards you can consider is already in our maybeboard.

Definitely a great list, keep up the good work!

hkhssweiss am replying you as well so the discussion can be read by others interested in this deck.

My Yennett deck has similar stats. I've managed to go off on Turn 1 only once, with a God draw. Turn 2s are possible too but Turns 3-5 are more common. I've a section in my Primer that covers what kind of draws would facilitate comboing off early ("As Easy as ABC").

The 1st spell I'd tutor for, is Expropriate too. By now, players are wise not to grant us more extra turns but ramping us by 3 extra lands is almost lethal too and many scoop if this is casted on Turns 2-3.

Given that I don't have access to green ramps, I rely heavily on artifacts, so I run all Signets, Talismans and Grim Monolith .

I got the "God" hand quite a few times in my several iterations of Intet, but they aren't ever T1 wins, they are T1 Intet into T2 wins. 6 CMC is quite hard, but any day I get T3 Intet it gets really hard to stop her. Haha I would love to duke out the decks between us two, it would seem really fun since we run time walk tribal decks! ^^

hkhssweiss I can imagine each game would end very fast since either one of us would combo off quickly. Unless the other draws some ready answers.

Yes we both have the same issue of having high cost commanders and they're the most vulnerable during the turn we summoned them. I run Force of Will , Pact of Negation and Misdirection as means to protect Yennett even when I'm all tapped out. I've considered Hall of the Bandit Lord but it is in my Maybeboard cause I don't like lands that come into play tapped.

Cloudius Same here I run that package, with the exception of Misdirection , as well as Boseiju, Who Shelters All , Vexing Shusher , and most cheap efficient counters.

I'm curious, is there a reason why you don't run Cavern of Souls or is control not really an issue in your meta?

hkhssweiss Vexing Shusher is a good card and a hidden gem, good call.

I don't run Boseiju, Who Shelters All cause I'm going to cast the spells without paying the mana cost anyway. It coming into play tapped actually makes me lose tempo.

As for Cavern of Souls , it is a tough call to exclude it. I do have a few friends playing counterspells but it ain't a big thing here in my meta.

Also, I value lands that produce colored mana over those that produce only colorless (I consider Cavern as producing colorless), especially since some of my spells have , or in their casting cost.
