Wait, You Guys Are Getting Turns?

Commander / EDH* Control Stax UBR (Grixis)

A damage dealing stax deck centered around Obeka, Brute Chronologist. I wanted to see how far she could be pushed, beyond just Sneak Attack and Feldon of the Third Path.

The idea is to make each turn suck so much that it would be better to just not take one at all, which is exactly what we'll be doing with Obeka.

Early game, the goal is to get out one or two continuous damge sources, then lock down the board with a stax piece. You might not need Obeka if your stax is something tame like Arcane Laboratory, but if you get intense with a Smokestack or Braids*, you'll probably want to start skipping turns. Consequently, you can push things like Smokestack much farther than most decks could, making it almost impossible for your opponents to do anything.

*If you're worried about Braids's legality, an acceptable substitute might be Lethal Vapors. You can avoid its bad effect by ending your turn before it triggers. As far as I know, Braids is legal in the 99, though.

Basically anything in this deck could be considered a wincon, but some are still worth mentioning:

  • Forsaken Wastes is slow, painful, and inevitable.
  • Obsidian Fireheart can get really bad really quickly if no one deals with it.
  • Manabarbs is going to kill everyone eventually (but probably your opponents first, because of your low mana curve).
  • Havoc Festival is fun because you can skip your upkeep, bringing even your Ajanied opponents down to critical health in a couple turns without harming yourself.
  • Zur's Weirding is weird, fittingly. It functions both as a stax piece and a damage outlet, with your opponents locking each other down while dealing damage to themselves. Or they could just conspire against you—who knows.
Skipping turns during the upkeep also means not drawing, so there are some remedies for that.

Browbeat and Pain's Reward both opt out of card draw to deal decent damage, which is a win-win for us. Doing them with Phyrexian Tyranny is funny.

Outside of that, Underworld Connections is a budget phyrexian arena, Quicksilver Dagger is nice, and Sygg, River Cutthroat will probably get out of hand.

Lastly, between Muddle the Mixture, Perplex, and Clutch of the Undercity, you can tutor virtually any card in the deck.

Lastly, because everyone at the table will be targetting you, there's some reanimation in Feldon, Coffin Queen, and Mimic Vat. Obeka can make these reanimations permanent.

Dang, this was supposed to be short. Comments and suggestions welcome!
