Control in Competitive EDH?? What once sounded like a sub-optimal game plan is now a completely viable option for play. The play style of this deck is centered around the same idea as Rashmi, Eternities Crafter, playing spells on other peoples turns and accumulating card advantage while countering other players win attempts. The majority of this deck takes influence from scepter Thrasios, Triton Hero and other control variants.

This is a primer for Thrasios, Triton Hero and Vial Smasher the Fierce in 4 player Free-For-All competitive EDH. The deck performs well into a variety of different metas, being flexible enough to sit back and accumulate card advantage through stax, control out fast combo decks, and stop those annoying creature based decks.

If you’re unfamiliar with multiplayer competitive EDH format/meta and want to learn more about it, check out the discord server at cEDH Discord - feel free to come by and ask questions or just hang out and chat about Magic.

Adaptive Combo: Adaptive Combo is the ability of a deck to win via various overlapping routes to victory. in other words, you can you use parts of other combos or similar combo pieces to do the same combo. this allows for several avenues of victory by utilizing a similar concept. Along the same lines, the deck is very resilient to most kinds of hate because it consists of a very tight combo protection suite.

Control: The deck is built in a way where it's main priority is to establish a card advantage engine and then start shutting down peoples avenues of victory. controlling the board when there are 3 other opponents is hard, and the only way this can be done over several turns is by gaining card advantage to enable the constant threat of a counter or removal spell. With a plethora of counter spells, bounce spells, and creature removal, we are able to make plays that put us ahead of other players while slowing down the decks that are faster than us.

The Controlling nature of this deck makes it difficult to pilot at times since there are so many key decision points that require forethought and advanced knowledge of other peoples decks.

Just like the Introductory quote suggests, the point of this deck is to ruin our opponents strategy so that our own strategy may bear fruit. The point of this deck is to quickly build an engine in order to out pace our opponents, with this engine we acquire large amounts of require card advantage all the while controlling the board with various counter and removal spells.

The deck operates similarly to Rashmi, Eternities Crafter, we want to throw a Keen Sense or Curiosity on Vial Smasher the Fierce and generate card draw by casting spells on other people's turns.

While playing this deck it is important to be patient. We are not playing a fast combo deck that likes to dive balls-deep into our combo. We want to exhaust the resources of our opponents first, before we try to go for the win. However, in some cases, you can jam your win condition early if you believe you have the counter magic to support it.

This combo costs and requires you to have Demonic Consultation + Thassa's Oracle in hand.

  1. Cast Thassa's Oracle
  2. Cast Demonic Consultation in response to the Thassa's Oracle trigger, exiling your entire library.
  3. Let the Thassa's Oracle trigger resolve and win the game.

This combo can also be executed the same way using Tainted Pact. For further redundancy, you can also use Jace, Wielder of Mysteries to accomplish the same thing.

There are two main strategies for winning with this deck:
