Voltron! Control! Tempo! Combo! Why choose one when you could choose all?

When I was looking for a new commander deck to make I stumbled upon Vadrok, Apex of Thunder. I don’t know why I never thought of this card before, but it is absolutely amazing as it allows you to build a deck in a variety of ways due to being able to recur non-creature permanents mana cost 3 or less.

After some inspiration I decided to take this deck in direction of a Voltron Control mix and here’s why:

For starters in my experience most decks in EDH games under cEDH level create some sort of board presence with creatures, be it wide or tall. With Vadrok you already need creatures for the mutate ability so why not use creature that give you yourself a threatening boardstate. Mutating Vadrok onto cards like Markov Blademaster, Toothy, Imaginary Friend, or Dream Trawler allow you to quickly take opponents out via commander damage and make a creature few would want to swing into. Likewise cards like Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin and Docent of Perfection   allow you to go wide. And then you have Cehpalid Constable and Thing in the Ice   being great creatures to mutate into that give us board control.

This boardstate allows us to play control without the downside of being randomly attacked due to the little blockers available. For that we have a selection of bounce spells that work two ways, also allowing us to bounce our mutate stack and use Vadrok’s ability again, a selection of counterspells, and of course more permanent forms of removal.

And finally we do have a few combos within the deck and if you get the pieces here’s how you can win that way:

Main Combo:

Smothering Tithe/Hullbreacher + Underworld Breach + Wheels (Generate Mana, Access to whole Library)

How to win:

Step 1: Once you have access to your library, configure a infinite mana combo

(Dockside Extortionist (5/7) + Lore Drakkis/Vadrok + Snap)

Or

(High Tide + Lore Drakkis + Cloud of Fairies + Snap)

Step 2: Once you have infinite mana you can go for a kill using one of the following loops

  1. Cast Lore Drakkis
  2. Mutate Vadrok into it
  3. With Vadrok's mutate trigger cast bounce spell of choice, target your mutate pile and bounce it to hand
  4. With Lore Drakkis's mutate trigger return to hand the spell we are looping
  5. Cast the spell we returned to our hand
  6. Repeat steps 1-5

(EX target Lightning Bolt/Reality Shift)

Or

  1. Cast Dack Fayden
  2. Activate Dack Fayden targeting opponent
  3. Cast Lore Drakkis
  4. Mutate Vadrok into it
  5. With Vadrok's mutate trigger cast bounce spell of choice, target your mutate pile and bounce it to hand
  6. With Lore Drakkis's mutate trigger return to hand a Chain of Vapor
  7. Bounce Dack Fayden back to hand
  8. Repeat steps 1-7
