DOMINARIA UNITED UPDATE —Sept. 9, 2022

Dominaria is always a sleeper set when thinking about best Magic sets, especially when it comes to dragons. This go around they managed to sprinkle some cool stuff into the story as well as some of the cards/legends we got which is always nice. The deck is almost at that point to where with how many dragons Wizards has been printing that only so many new cards are able to come in the deck anymore unless they're strictly better versions on Dragons in the list. Hopefully Wizards pumps the breaks on having multiple mythic staples dragons in the next year.

Rith, Liberated Primeval > Dragonlord Atarka

Rith is so perfect for the deck with the mana cost reduction. Providing Ward to all the key dragons makes opponents blowing out our combat with key dragons more difficult for wanting them to hold up mana on our turn. It also provides some incentive for opponents to not chump block if we have a few dragons swinging in as it can provide to our board to either draw more cards/shoot down more dragons. It pains me to cut Dragonlord Atarka as I've always wanted to keep the deck Khans themed but with all the new busted dragons they kept printing, it was time to go. A dragon at this high of a mana cost and only shooting for 5 damage just isn't efficient anymore.

Rivaz of the Claw > Secluded Courtyard

Very excellent dragon ramper to curve out super quickly into 5/6 drop dragons as well as some graveyard utility for recursion. Unfortunately, the deck can't get around the exile ability effectively but still a huge ability to have on a mana dork. With the deck slowly getting a cheaper average CMC across the board and limited actual cards that are worth cutting now, I just cut the worst land I saw. The activated ability part of Courtyard never comes up to be important so I'd rather actual mana sources than conditional ones for dragons unless they have a more impactful other ability on the land.

Sivitri, Dragon Master > Sarkhan the Masterless

Strictly better upgrade to Sarkhan. More punishing damage with the first ability, a dragon tutor stapled on at 4 mana which is pretty standard for a tutor and gladly useful and an ultimate that can be easily reached to wipe everyone else's board is amazing. Sarkhan's only real use in the deck was his passive ability to deter attackers but Sivitri does that better and more.

Two-Headed Hellkite > Dragonlord Silumgar

Hellkite is one of the special singleton dragons that can catch you back up in a game if you're threat light with it's card draw and evasion. Combined with other cards in the deck, this one card can single handedly bring you back into the game or pull you ahead with it's power. Silumgar was only really useful in the deck having Deathtouch in conjunction with Sarkhan the Masterless. But now because Sarkhan is gone, Silumgar doesn't really serve a purpose anymore as stealing one thing on one of your opponents is impactful enough to swing the game.

Brainstealer Dragon > Majestic Genesis

Trying this dragon out to see if it's consistent enough and for fun. There's limitless potential on what you could steal but you can also get nothing from your opponents. The second ability also might not be relevant but would have to see what ends up happening with this Dragon. If it doesn't end up working out, it'll most likely get replaced with Ancient Copper Dragon. Hopefully it stops going up in price. Genesis never was reliable to swing you back into the game if you top deck it or push you far enough ahead when you have a developed board already. With it's high mana cost, even with Ur-Dragon costing 9 mana, I was always disappointed with casting it.

What a nicely written Baldur's Gate Update MattN7498!!

When Wrathful Red Dragon got spoiled i also knew right from the start this is gonna be a staple in Dragon Tribal Decks, period. Same goes for Thrakkus the Butcher. Doubling the attackpower of every Dragon you control? Insane. Giving them trample via Garruk's Uprising for example and double strike via Atarka, World Render or a quick The Ur-Dragon trigger into Sylvia Brightspear in addition and we look at a pretty effective Overrun.

I think we still don't quite get how powerful Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm will be in this deck, it's gonna be almost hilarious. Double Terror of the Peaks and Scourge of Valkas triggers are going to make me smile, haha.

I switched Crux of Fate (i know, i know..) for Blasphemous Act as my Playgroup tends to steal my cards, so they use Crux of Fate to wipe the board with all my dragons or i can't wipe their board as they control MY dragons. With Blasphemous Act i make sure everything dies and comes back to MY graveyard, it also serves as a finisher with Blasphemous Act + Wrathful Red Dragon , shoot x times 13 Damage at non-Dragon targets, including life totals, where x is the number of Dragons you control. With Blasphemous Act you also have yet another way to get your Dragons into the Graveyard for mass reanimation spells like Patriarch's Bidding, Living Death, Haunting Voyage or Twilight's Call.

By the way I really like Twilight's Call as you can play it at instant speed which can be a game changer for example when someone tries to exile our graveyard. More often then not did the Foretell mechanic of Haunting Voyage hindered me by ONE turn to win the game and made me loose, which is why i changed it to Twilight's Call.

I wish cards like Old Gnawbone and Ancient Copper Dragon wouldn't be as expensive as they are, as they would also be a fine addition for my The Ur-Dragon Deck, for obvious reasons.

In general, you were a HUGE inspiration for my own iteration of an The Ur-Dragon Deck and i always come back to your Primer when i need some advice or thoughts on cards. So thank you for the write-up!

Some day I would love to show you my The Ur-Dragon Deck, as i would very much appreciate to hear your thoughts on some of my card picks! (I still need to post it on tappedout..)

Cheers!

No Firkraag, Cunning Instigator ? Just curious because I didn't see an inclusion or exclusion for this one and seems like a decent fit. Although spots are tight haha

Reaperfire For sure! You could cut some of the more odd cards for better interactions and protection but this deck is a bit more casual than my other ones so I just jam the fun cards and don't care a ton about have the correct amount of interaction.

Ebegeezer Usually I'm looking for hands with 3-4 lands, a threat or two, ramp and a card draw engine to refill. The biggest thing with the deck is dumping everything to ramp into the dragons and then casting one, it dying and then having no action. So if you can get the engines to start drawings that would be key.

Niemandswasser Yes I have! It has provided a great way of providing fuel for the big recursion engines and value if you're dragons die to draw more cards. The deck has been moving in a way that the dragons have less power so you're not able to draw as many cards. Might have to include a Crucible of Fire in the future since they're getting lower with each set but I like it a lot if you're doing graveyard interactions!

HerbivoreDragon Yes I think if I were to get another wipe in the deck, I'd add Blasphemous Act for that potential interaction. I've played Twilight's Call in other decks before. I think the ones I have included are better versions of it and there might be a few others out there I'm not thing of but if you're wanting to play more of that effect, I don't see a problem with it. Just don't overload on them.

tinqle I was only including in the update the Elders and one's I wanted to put in the deck if I had space. Firkraag in the exclusion tab further down in the page of the deck description and a small explanation on why. Basically, Firkraag is better as the head of a Goad deck rather than a Goading creature in a dragon deck. With it, I'd rather be goading a lot of creatures than just one per turn.

MattN749,

what do you think about Hellkite Tyrant since treasure tokens are easy to get ?

Pascal93 I think if you included all the treasure makers, I could definitely see it if your meta also had a lot of artifact decks.

How has Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund been working out for you? I excluded using it because if someone clones it you lose all your dragons. If you haven't run into that problem often I could always use another haste enabler.

MoxRavager Great! Would never take him out of the deck. I used to run him as the Commander and was very aware of what would happen with the clone effects. So usually I don't play him unless I'm going for kills instead of just blind jamming him.

Hey MattN7498!

I just found your list and I really like it.

I was wondering, if you could provide a list of all recursion possibilities within your list and also the ones you excluded and the reason behind it.

I have the feeling, I'm missing them and I was wondering, which I should pick to run and why.

Ahdor I think that would be a little bit much of reasons for not including every single other recursion card. The mass recursion cards I have are in the Utility section of the primer. But there's no other mass reanimator cards that are decently costed/synergize with my deck in Magic right now that aren't the two I'm including.

MattN7498 maybe I'm just blind or stupid. But that's exactly my question.

When I'm reading through your "Utility" section, I can't find any recursion card. I have the feeling the description is either a bit outdated, or I'm really bad and don't understand how to read it.

I assume the two mass recursion cards you are talking about are Haunting Voyage and Patriarch's Bidding, correct?

Ahdor Sorry they're in Finisher Section.

MattN7498 thanks a lot!

Another question that came to my mind:

Which card did you exchange for Majestic Genesis?
