ZENDIKAR RISING UPDATE —Sept. 18, 2020

Hello! Back to Zendikar this time (again)! Lots of cool EDH to brew around and gear up a lot of different decks. Commander Legends is also just around the corner in the next month so hopefully that’ll bring some cool new dragons or etched alters to add to this deck. This go around on the deck updates just adding a few more efficient things and then I’m STILL working on getting some actual alters done to this deck, so we’ll see how that goes! I will be sure to update the primer information whenever I get a chance.

Leyline Tyrant > Drakuseth, Maw of Flames

This new dragon is interesting. While we are not a mono red deck, it is the most prevalent color in the deck. There come some situations as the game progresses that you may not use all your mana so saving red mana could help with ramping and if you accumulate enough, it could be a nice burn spell for someone wiping the field. Works well with Selvala, Heart of the Wilds and making a lot of mana. Drakuseth is the biggest derpy dragon out of the bunch so working towards being less mana hungry and more efficient, he had to get the cut.

Nature's Lore > Fires of Invention

On paper, I thought Fires would be great for this deck but actually was very bad. Not only were there opportunities for me to cast 2+ spells in a turn as well as running into issues with non land ramp and being constricted. So we decided to throw in some more ramp in. Hopefully we can add some Triomes to the mana base that make sense to have better synergy with ramping.

Morophon, the Boundless > Ramos, Dragon Engine

Ramos is cool but to get the payoff for the mana, you must cast multiple spells beforehand which usually never happened. While Morophon does not reduce as much of the decks cost as you would want, the small mana advantage still helps and being able to cast Ur-Dragon easier with him is incredibly good.

Dragonlord Kolaghan > Niv-Mizzet, Parun

Being a five-color deck, thinking so far ahead with fetching for lands to be able to cast all the spells and thinking about Niv Mizzet is difficult. The payoff which him is good but with that in mind as well as no cost reduction for Ur-Dragon, it was a very obvious cut to get Kolaghan back in. I do my best to try to keep the Dragonlords in to stay on theme with Khans. His haste ability is good for the deck and niche scenarios with the last ability for casting the same creatures.

Frontier Siege > Anguished Unmaking

Anguished Unmaking is one of the better removal spells in the format. However, being a one-time effect just felt so lack luster into some other form of removal. Plus, the age old solution of “if you don’t have artifact removal, have player removal” seems to hold up well with this deck with its draws. Frontier Siege has dual purpose in providing some ramp if needed or being a creature removal.

Rhystic Study > Rishkar's Expertise

Rishkar’s Expertise was a little too expensive and relying to draw cards at the end of the curve could have potential for blowout if you are light on creatures and they remove it in response. Rhystic Study obvious Commander staple to get back into deck for best card draw.

Jator Ugin's main purpose is for his minus ability which really isn't what a deck full of creatures wants (even though it makes sense to have this deck with the Tarkir theme). Sarkhan used to be in the deck but his abilities ended up being useless outside of his ultimate. Both of these walkers have insane ultimates by including them in the deck for that reason is kinda a pitfall in that you usually never get them to ultimate range.

If I have access to all 10 fetchlands, should I run them? And if so, what should I replace?

NebulaMink If you have access to all the fetchlands feel free to use them! I only run the Khans ones for flavor and having too many fetches in your deck maybe not help later on in the game as having a lot of fetches will reduce the amount of lands you draw in the deck decreasing your chances of being able to get to Ur-Dragon mana the more you fetch.

Jator The new dragon is very cool and will definitely be finding it's way in. Lithoform Engine is a very cool card but seems too much mana/win more. Usually don't need double triggered abilities for them to work, most of the spells don't need to be copied and a lot of the permanents are legendary.
