Minor update. 09/18/2017 —Sept. 18, 2017

Good day everyone and it is time for another update. This one should provide some more consistency and ramp to the deck. We have only move two cards this time as it is getting harder and harder to make cuts to the deck. I really want to add more, but I have no idea what to take out for more and more cards. Anyway, lets get to the changes.

Thought Vessel ----> Carpet of Flowers: Behold the might that is the carpet of flowers. Found this thing last Thursday and the guy who was using it was just ramping like crazy. Especially with most top tier commanders having blue in their deck in some way, this will almost always provide benefit in some way.

Lurking Predators ----> Phyrexian Arena: I had a hard time deciding about this card. I love lurking predators, but every time I would use it, this thing either netted me maybe two creatures, it often missed a lot, or it was targeted really fast before it got out of hand. Needless to say, I have had a few games where the deck goes, and well, it just doesn't stop and runs over everything like a freaking freight train.

Worldgorger Dragon: At this moment, I have not put in the combo. I have the cards to do it, but my friend, upon hearing that I was even thinking of doing the worldgorger combo, nearly flipped and told me that I should not be doing that to people. It is a taboo and a cruelty that should never be inflicted upon anyone. Needless to say, he was not happy when I told him this. So as of right now, it isn't in the deck. I also want to make a note and keep an eye out for another upcoming deck I rebuilding/designing. It will be the return to my first competitive commander who got dismantled due to um, well, turn 2-4 wins? Probably more like turn 3-4 but it was a thing. My old commander Prossh, Skyraider of Kher will be returning to his full glory. It will not be friendly and will be very dangerous. The old one is still on tapped out, so check it out if you guys want, but it will be receiving a major update here soon.

Totally don't blame you for removing Dragonlord's Servant. I removed it a while ago and didn't look back. I agree that I'd prefer another ramp card in that slot.

Also don't blame you for cutting O-Kagachi. He just didn't perform for me either. I wonder about Sunscorch Regent as a replacement though. Personally I would add Dragon Broodmother from your maybelist. She is a bomb with cards like Kindred Discovery, Scourge of Valkas, Dragon Tempest, and any of the "whenever a dragon attacks" cards.

Herald's Horn I cut but part of me wants to bring it back and replace dragonspeaker shaman with it. Of course the shaman's cost reduction is better but he is more vulnerable as a creature and has double red in his casting cost. If you could choose to keep one, which would you have kept?

I like reading about your changes. Keep it up :)

I was working really hard on building my own Ur Dragon deck because ever since I was a child I was always into dragons! I built my first dragons deck around Intet, the Dreamer which that deck is by far one of the best decks I have built for commander! that deck is "The Dragon's Nest" if you would like to take a look! My own Ur-Dragon deck is The Dragon's Nest: Ancestry(which really needs some help). I really enjoyed looking at your deck and will definitely use your deck as a reference! May the hunt live on!

@MegaMatt13: Hey there Matt. Glad you enjoy reading my dissertations. I am also glad that you agree with the servants removal. I just think for what he does, it just seems lackluster and having a dork that can make mana for any spell is much more relevant. Selvala's Stampede is game winning when played on turn 3. Also yes, I played Selvala's Stampede on turn 3 in a game. It got me my Deathrite Shaman, Hellkite Tyrant(who proceeded to steal my opponents Chromatic Lantern), and a Savage Ventmaw. The ramp that game was so good. Nobody caught up and my dragons just ate everything.

One reason why I didn't add Dragon Broodmother is because I don't own her and the fact that she costs 3 red and 1 green as a requirement scares me a little, but I understand why one puts her in. She is good, however, another card I have considered was Skyline Despot. Become the monarch and make tokens if you keep the monarch, seem pretty decent.

I have also consider Phyrexian Arena, which when combined with Sunscorch Regent, basically kills off the negative side effect of the arena. I also really want to add back in Herald’s Horn. The discount and potential card draw is nice, have there been times it has whiffed, yes it has, but it still does its job well. No clue where to put it right now. I personally like Herald’s Horn over Dragonspeaker Shaman but I can understand the dispute that is coming from this. I really think I prefer cost reduction spells to be in form of enchantments and artifacts instead of creatures.

@DrkNinja: Please nothing has been offended. You made suggestions and it is okay. Yeah do I want to run The Ur-Dragon, but I still won't deny the power that the Scion of the Ur-Dragon brings. Thing is though, I have everything I really need to convert the deck over to scion when I want to. I might not have Reanimate, but that can easily be fixed. Thing to remember is that while yes a commander game is still reliant on the commander, this deck can still basically function without ever casting The Ur-Dragon where scion is needed to be cast. Yeah it is a lot of fun cast The ur-dragon but he isn't needed for every situation. I also agree that using scion to dump the ur-dragon into the graveyard just to recur him multiple times is great, but I have gotten The Ur-Dragon out on turn 5 before. Is it hard, sure, but still not impossible. This deck has competed with some of the other power house decks in my group. I have a friend who has a decked out Yidris storm deck, another with a not as decked out Yidris storm deck, another with multiple infinite combos in a Mikaeus, the Unhallowed deck. This deck has competed fine against them. Gotten mana screwed a few times, but that is all a part of the building process. Hence why I am thinking of a paradox engine build with more mana rocks, signets, and draw power. All things to think about. So please nobody was offended, would I prefer to see comments on The Ur-Dragon, yeah, but tis life and I knew it wasn't going to happen all the time. So if you have other suggestions for The Ur-Dragon, or maybe even suggestions for a scion deck, I am listening. I might decide to pick up a second dragons precon just to build the scion deck. A shitty land base will more than likely be in that scion deck but I could still build it.

@CinnaToastKrunch: Hey there Krunch. I am glad you enjoyed the deck. It has been a work in progress and I love the concept of what it does. Intet, the Dreamer is a great card and was something I was considering building a deck for, ultimately I did not, but he is still a great commander. I will have a look at your decks when I get some time for them, maybe leave a comment and see what I can do to help. Please check back often for updates here, I am still moving things around and deciding what direction I want to go with it. Maybe more ramp, unsure right now. Anyway, please compare all you want and have a great day.

I'm on mobile so sorry for lack of formatting.

But animate dead and worldgorger dragon goes for infinite mana.

It's explained in detail in the link below:http://tappedout.net/mtg-combos/animate-dead+worldgorger-dragon/

Derpsofdoom I like you opinion on O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami, and am thinking of removing him as well, when it comes to my deck when you get the time I need help on obviously card suggestions but as to what cards to cut and what to replace. I am looking forward to seeing this deck evolve!

Derpsofdoom totally agree with you on the need for Mana Rocks - I've added Lion's Eye Diamond, a Mox Diamond and Mana Crypt to my list and actually won against Kaalia due to the extra acceleration! Okay...the guy playing Group Hug continuously adding +1/+1 counters onto Ramos helped too ;)

Just as an fyi, if you want the deck to be competitive the cmc shouldn't really be over 3 and also know that combat isn't really a viable way to win in cEDH and that it will only stay in t3 if you keep it combat based.

I dig the deck, +1.

Thoughts on Sarkhan's Triumph? Seems like an decent inclusion in any dragon tribal deck running .

The deck is a good start, I would suggest taking out Dragonlord Kolaghan since the only thing you have with it is a 5/6 with flying and haste. It is nice that it gives haste, but that last effect is useless. I would suggest Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund it is a lot better. It has the first 3 effects of Kolaghan, but steals dragons from other players. Also Deathrite Shaman is out of place here, I would suggest throwing Dragonspeaker Shaman back in.

Hey Derpsofdoom,

Very nice decklist! I've also been trying to create a moderately competitive ur-dragon shell after opening the C17 precon because I've found him to be such a fun commander.

A few questions:

  1. In your testing, how effective has Rhystic Study been? I've been running Phyrexian Arena as card advantage in its place and have been debating between the two options.

  2. Is there any particular reason you decided to drop Broodmate Dragon? He's actually one of my favorite dragons to play since it counts as a double etb trigger for cards like Temur Ascendancy, Kindred Discovery , Dragon Tempest etc.

It's always nice to find others to bounce ideas off of. Happy deck building!

BrettonTheKid, I've personally found Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund to be more trouble than he's worth. Depending on your playgroup, a lot of popular EDH spells targeting Karrthus can steal a winning board away from you. I'm talking about common EDH staples such as Rite of Replication, Bribery, various reanimate effects, and clone effects (which don't target).

Homeward path should fix stealing. I'd say, check out my deck. It's dragon tribal control.

Hey everybody, it has been a little while since my last post, but I am here to answer everybody's questions and clear up any confusion. So without further ado, lets start another dissertation.

@MadDogLai: I am well aware of the worldgorger combo, and have been considering it for a while. If combined with something like the Elemental Bond and Temur Ascendancy, then that also means you have infinite draw to go with that infinite mana. You would essentially win the game right there at that point so I have been really considered putting that combo in.

@Rabid_Wombat: Yeah, more rocks the better. decided to not go with paradox engine, but have been considering getting some new cards, in fact, I already have some on the way. Sadly, the Mana Crypt that I really want is not in said package. I also wouldn't mind owning a Mox Diamond as well. Those two are great cards. I am a little hesitant on Lion's Eye Diamond because it is a sac affect and well price. Those three all together are over $200. think I will start with just getting my Mana Crypt as a start and keep building up from there.

@potatopotatopotato: Yeah, I know that top tier competitive commander decks all have a low average cmc and are generally not built around attacking. I get that, but, I still feel there is a way to do it. I believe any deck can be competitive if build correctly. Maybe cards don't exist for said competitive version yet, maybe they do and nobody has built it yet. Doesn't mean I can't stop trying. So while your opinion is valid, I will continue with how I want to play and make my damn best attempt at this deck for competitive. Thank you for your advice, and if you have any insights on the deck, I will be more than happy to hear about it.

@Forkbeard: I am glad you enjoyed the deck, it has been a labor of love for quite sometime and I am happy to see how far it has come. So on the thought of Sarkhan's Triumph, I like it, but it is a 3 mana specific tutor. We run Demonic Tutor for the reason that it searches for any card. Which with that in mind, I would think of running another card that adds any card to hand like Demonic tutor does. Cards that come to mind are Beseech the Queen, Diabolic Tutor, Grim Tutor, or even Enlightened Tutor. There also the tutors that put cards on top of the deck, like Vampiric Tutor. I think the ability to search for any card is just arguably more powerful than going for a dragon. The deck also might need more draw power, so I think adding something like Fact or Fiction or Treasure Cruise could be happening. I am also having a hard time fitting any more tutor like cards into the deck right now.

@BrettonTheKid: I personally like Dragonlord Kolaghan. She is great, and it is fine even if the last ability is dead in the water. She is cheaper than Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund, and does the same thing as him without stealing dragons, which if your opponents don't play dragons, is also a dead in the water ability. My playgroups also play a lot of clone affects, so I would end up losing all of my dragons and would die right there on the spot. I do run Homeward Path in the event my stuff does get stolen, but that is one card out of 99. I will not deny though, that Karrthus is a great dragon and was something I did consider. So on to the next part, how is Deathrite Shaman out of place. We get a mana dork that comes out turn 1, can use any of the 10 fetch lands that I have used, or any of the ones that an opponent uses (remember, he can target any graveyard), and he can screw with graveyard decks. Gotten stuck in an infinite loop with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed's undying affect? Guess what, Deathrite Shaman just exiled the creature that was going infinite with the undying affect from Mikaeus. In the words of a friend of mine, Deathrite Shaman is a 1 mana planeswalker essentially.

@Dragonstompy: I am very glad that you enjoy the decklist. It has been fun, but improvements can always be made. In my testing for Rhystic Study, It never comes out. This card stays in the deck and should probably never be removed. It is just so good for drawing. Most competitive decks aren't going to let a rhystic study slow down there progress towards winning so you will be drawing off of that. Some of the time, it will be a lot of cards. If they pay for the study, then they are slowing down their progress which is also something you want. People don't want the dragons to explode, but they also don't want to slow down. Rhystic Study contains only downsides for the opponents and we spent 3 mana for it. I have also considered adding Phyrexian Arena as an extra draw source for the deck along with Rhystic Study. Would certainly never cut the study though. As for Broodmate Dragon, for 6 mana (5 with The Ur-Dragon commander), I just don't think he does enough for the deck. He does give a total power of 8 across two creatures, but I think I would rather spend that mana someplace else. To me, something like Hellkite Tyrant is just so much better. It is a matter of personal opinion, but I can see his appeal for the double enter battlefield triggers with say Scourge of Valkas or Dragon Tempest.

Alright people, that is my lengthy explanations. There will be another update coming here soon. As I mentioned earlier, got new cards coming in, and hopefully they speed up the deck further. One of the new cards being Carpet of Flowers and with most generals using blue in some way, this means only straight profit/value out of this card. Anyway, have a great day everyone and stay safe.
