Guilds of Ravnica Release —Oct. 8, 2018

Well, with another set comes another batch of updates to the deck. Guilds of Ravnica features the Selesnya, the Golgari, and the Dimir within our deck's colors, although the more tuned this list becomes, the fewer potential additions we can find. There's fewer updates this time around, but I'll add a slightly longer future sight to accommodate.

Arcane Sanctum --> Tropical Island

I, somehow, managed to win an Eternal Weekend Trial (piloting "Oops, All Spells"), and this Tropical Island was the prize. While I don't expect everyone to be able to afford a Tropical Island, this list always reflects what I have in paper, and I now have a Tropical Island! Hooray for me!

Windborn Muse --> Bounty Hunter

Windborn Muse was just one mana too much to be worth it in most games--we often had to tap out of counterspell protection to play it, which didn't help much against the aggro decks. Bounty Hunter is what Shriekmaw always wanted to be--it can target any commander, plus a few artifacts and enchantments (including the transforming Enchantments from the Ixalan block and Paradox Engine). We can't hit nonlegendaries, but being able to threaten commanders from turn two feels waay too good to pass up.

Progenitor Mimic --> Knight of Autumn

Boy, will I miss Progenitor Mimic. It was really, really slow though--often requiring us to spend almost all our mana only to not produce any copies of itself (since it just died before our upkeep). The PMCI was such a fun concept, but with Arcane Artisan, Bramble Sovereign, and Rite of Replication in the deck, I had a hard time justifying a fourth token producer (that cost six mana!) that didn't produce any tokens until my next upkeep. Knight of Autumn is a Reclamation Sage when we need one, and has two other less-relevant modes in case they become necessary. Being able to find removal off of Chord of Calling, Green Sun's Zenith, or Recruiter of the Guard is relevant too. Depending on how awkward the Knight is, Progenitor Mimic might come back in, but Hostage Taker might just make a triumphant return instead.

Knight of Autumn --> Assassin's Trophy

Welp, easy in, easy out. Assassin's Trophy is great, and deals with anything we need it to. Knight was fine, but not spectacular.

Lighthouse Chronologist --> Nezahal, Primal Tide

Chronologist just never mattered. It was essentially a 9 mana creature, and that tied up all of our protective blue mana. Nezahal is in as an option for No Maximum Hand Size, while also drawing us more cards and being hard to deal with.

This deck is so much fun that I've begun the process of foiling this deck out; several cards have been foiled/Masterpieced on this list as well.

Future Sight:

Dread Cacodemon has not been as exciting as I would have hoped, but I've been playing against a lot of control decks lately. We'll see if I play against more aggro/midrange decks here to justify its spot, otherwise it might come out.

Austere Command --> Cleansing Nova

I have no idea which modular boardwipe is better--the cheaper, but slightly less flexible one, or the precision of the six mana Command? I'm going to start a tally of how often I would rather have the Nova, and how often I would rather have Command.

Arcane Artisan

This card has exceeded my expectations in so many ways. With Riftsweeper in the deck, we don't have to worry about losing access to a card permanently, and it not only lets us cheat more expensive creatures into play at instant speed, but it lets us draw a card to replace them too!

Dominating Licid

Oh my is this card still weird. I never know when to play it or how to evaluate it. On the bright side, my opponents have also had no idea how to evaluate it or play around it. When one of us figures out how to play this card optimally, I'll let you know.

Teferi, Hero of Dominaria

This deck has no planeswalkers. Having one would be cool. Teferi untaps lands, making Thrasios even better. He removes problem nonland permanents, even if they're indestructible. And his ult is just silly with Thrasios.

Nezahal, Primal Tide

A Recent addition that I'm not sold on yet. No max hand size is nice once Tatyova, Benthic Druid starts feeding our hand, and the extra draw power any time ANY other player casts a noncreature spell is cool. Being sort-of protected against removal is nice too. But seven mana is a ton of mana, and it's possible this will eventually become either Kruphix, God of Horizons or Mystic Confluence--we'll see after we give Nez a chance to prove itself.
