Rivals of Ixalan Prerelease —Jan. 13, 2018

I've been continuing to update the deck, although most new changes got thrown into the previous edit. It's getting pretty long though, so I'll start a new one here.

Several updates were made to the deck description, to show how the new list functions.

The manabase was altered slightly.

Rewind --> Plasm Capture So rewind is arguably better here. Unlike plasm capture, we can use the mana immediately, it doesn't require a ton of colored mana, and it will always get us at least one activation of Thrasios. However, there's a weird infinite combo that we can do by continually casting our own creature from the graveyard with Havengul Lich and countering it with our own rewind, untapping, then populating an Eternal Witness token. This deck is NOT meant to go infinite, so the switch had to be made.

Mirage Mirror --> Swords to Plowshares Oh boy, did this one hurt. Mirage Mirror is AWESOME in our deck. It does basically anything we want it to do. BUT it goes infinite, since we can turn token copies of it into lands, which produce more mana (thanks to mana reflection) than we spend. So, quite sadly, we had to cut it. Swords came out for the 2HG tourney's unified decklist rules, but it's now back in.

Spitting Image --> Tetzimoc, Primal Death So, spitting image making tokens (and being retraceable) is nice, but it costs 6 and I like playing my lands, not discarding them. Tetzimoc is a beast and a half for Ravos to recur, since he really wants to be in our hand. Not being able to sink the mana at our opponents' end step stinks, but he still hits multiple creatures on entry.

Saheeli's Artistry --> Slaughter the Strong Saheeli's means a lot less to us now that Mirage Mirror is gone. I'm a little worried that cutting both of these means we won't have enough cloning power to start our combo, since we'll be down to just two ways to produce the first token copies of something (Rite of Replication and Progenitor Mimic), but surviving long enough to tutor seems like a better game plan than dying before the machine comes online. Slaughter the Strong is a boardwipe that doesn't kill Thrasios but does kill our faster, angrier opponents (even Avacyn, Angel of Hope) and it only costs 3. Woohoo!

Slaughter the Strong --> Siren Stormtamer Welp, Slaughter the strong didn't last long. 2 White was a little bit too rough to consistently hit early and actually get advantage from the low CMC. By the time we wanted to play this, a lot of times it did more harm than good. Instead, we bring in Siren Stormtamer, a 1 drop that protects our valuable creatures (and our valuable self), and is a wizard for Path of Ancestry and Voidmage Prodigy value!

Thanks for the advice, Daedalus19876! I incorporated several of your suggestions--the Mana Reflection, Orchards, and Beast Withins. I threw in Kami of False Hope rather than the Constant Mists, though. There have also been several more changes, and the numbers got stupidly bigger.

Mostly I have a higher-than-usual number of lands in here because I want each Thrasios activation to find be a land with the scry, so that I can always hit the ramps in the earlygame. I might cut one or two, but with lands like Temple of the False God, High Market, Alchemist's Refuge or Reliquary Tower that are useless in the earlygame for getting all of our colors (but great in the later game), I really want to be sure I have enough lands to get all the colors I need.

Any other suggestions? I know you have a particularly keen insight on the commander scene here on TappedOut (your Avacyn, the Purifier deck is terrifying!)--I was really happy to see that you had commented on my deck!

Burgeoning or Exploration are really good with card draw and bounce lands.

rupture spire and transguild promenade are possible cuts. I think most 5 color lands will be better.

slumgar sorcerer only counters creatures, maybe swap with another counterspell?

Bloom Tender might be worth the money?

signet are clever with mana reflection. 2 normal lands with the reflection is 4 mana, 1 land and a signet is 5. Maybe worth adding more of them, over sakura-tribe elder or thought vessel?

Really cool deck, I hope you have fun playing it!
