Volrath's Return —Aug. 5, 2019

Volrath, Shapestealer

Upon spoiling I was instantly smitten with this new take on a classic character from Magic's history. Honestly, I wasn't really thrilled with his original printing in Volrath the Fallen as it didn't seem to have much utility outside of being a big exotic-ish Legendary creature.

However his new debut seems to fit perfectly in an Atraxa proliferate deck: His first ability gives a great proliferate target while his second ability allows for some very powerful utility as he could serve as another proliferation source (so long as the creature has a counter on them) or more interestingly he could target a Blighted Agent and become an unblockable 7/5 with infect. Volrath, the Shapestealer seems like he was practically made to support this deck, and I can't wait to get my hands on on him. He is already slotted in - replacing Phyrexian Metamorph (seems like a direct upgrade, no?). Additionally, I removed Rancor in favor of Simic Ascendancy, as having more counter support is necessary.

What're your thoughts on this new monstrosity that was spoiled for Commander 2019?
