Post-Play Testing! 292 Votes!!! —Dec. 31, 2017

Sorry for the absence everyone! I have honestly not had a ton of time to play the last few months. However, I had a couple games this week, and here are a few changes I am making. Let me know what you think!!!

Although Victimize has a ton of potential, it has let me down way to often. My grave is normally empty due to our commander.

Dreamborn draws WAY to much hate! Fact or Fiction on the other hand makes your opponent feel like they have power... but they really don't! haha

Plunder ended up being a dud. Another board-wipe on the other hand was plenty needed.

Lich was another test that duded out. I am really excited to see how Expropriate plays out!

I found myself tired of drawing counters, but a cheep removal spell is normally pretty nice!

Hey! Thank you for the great decklist! Building it myself now as well! Just got a few questions:1. Why not include Liliana, Death's Majesty. She really worked for me quite some time. Most of the time you can keep her protected and the extra zombie every turn is quite nice. 2. Why not include the boots (hexproof and shroud) to protect our commander? I have had it multiple times that he is removed before i can take my turn. Ofc he goes to my hand, but I hardly have him triggering.

The rest, i think the deck is awesome and finally a worthy commander for a zombie tribal!

Thanks!

Hey, I used a combo of both this and the budget version and I think it might be my favorite deck ever. Anyways, I was looking through the new C17 cards, and I saw Taigam, Sidisi's Hand and see absolutely no reason not to run that card. Thoughts?

Gloks: Thanks for the support man! It is sad to see the hype for the deck die down a bit with all of the Commander 2017 coming out (I am building 3 of those decks myself...). I think this deck might be my most fun ones yet! It is very interactive and often-times political. It might not smash-face as much a Om_rath, but sometimes you just need a break from that!

kevinscheurwater: liliana, death's majesty was once in the deck, but it is hard to justify it for 5cmc. Any spots above 4cmc have to be strongly justified in this deck because of the lack or ramp, and the priorities of mana-usage. Great card, and I would recommend it to anyone regardless!

Boots are something to think about... it just comes to priorities... I will have to think about that one... I am noticing quite a bit of spot-removal when I really don't want it/about to go off...

TheRealAdam: I am glad you are liking the deck so much!!! Do you have any cool stories to share?! Taigam, Sidisi's Hand seems interesting... I might try it out...

I am going to post my The Scarab God list I've been playing with later this week, but now I know I will never surpass your deck's popularity :'(

That's what I get for being late to the party I suppose! ;)

Forbid is a great recurring counterspell that puts cards where you need them.

Out of curiosity, why no Geth?

Looking over the list, you can untap Ghoulcaller Gisa to keep making zombos, probably not worth running.

It also untapped all legendary creatures I make copies of. Has been relevant many times. Worse case scenario, it is just another Island with a possible upside. (more comments to come once I finish my midterms tonight!)

Awesome Deck! Almost what I wanted to do, although I'd like to focus more on reanimation. What you think about Ulamog's Nullifier instead of a counterspell? It sounds pretty insane to me. You can get back the stuff exiled from oponents graveyards with Scarab god und you can even recast him from the Graveyard to counter twice :)

So I tried Rooftop Storm akong with Gravecrawler in the deck and have to say I am pretty impressed. Found out that zombie swarm is not the best line to win, perhaps my build is more control than aggro. Usually I ended lot of games with Torment of Hailfire. I really like the way Rooftop Storm synergizes with few cards in the deck, namely Havengul Lich. If you have sac outlet out you are golden.

I would also like to try a new card Vindictive Lich. It does affect the whole board and the effect seems very strong. If you can recur him it can be very nasty.

Hey again.

Thanks for the feedback on liliana en the boots. I think I'm gonna agree with you on Liliana, Death's Majesty. She might be a bit overprice for what she does!

Btw, since I don't have a Damnation, i replaced it for Life's Finale and even tho its 2 mana cost more and you have the general rule of cards above 5 mana really need to be justified. I think this is one of them. You whipe the board and dump 3 of the more powerfull cards from an opponent in their graveyard and after that you drag em out with the scarab god.

I played a few times with it and I really enjoyed that boardwhipe.

When will you do the Ixilan update?

VexenX says... #15

Are there any updates? I don't think Ixalan gives us anything.. Banner is the only maybe, but I think our draw power is fine.

Sweet new artwork for Drowned Catacombs for a start lol.

But in all seriousness, Arcane Adaptation makes the handful of non-zombies zombies, as well as it turns the Scarab God into a zombie so that Path of Ancestry works for even more scrying.

Boneyard Parley may be worth checking out, and Search for Azcanta could help get some of the enchantments.

So wait what was your reason for taking out Endless Ranks of the Dead? The description confused me.

October 18, 2017 10:42 p.m.

mikeintosh says... #18

I think Endless Ranks of the Dead is just not good enough. You are usually glad if you get at least couple of zombies from it. My friend tried the card in dedicated zombie tribal deck with Ghoulcaller Gisa and even there it was underwhelming.

Regarding Ixalan I found out two well performing cards as an addition to the deck, Arcane Adaptation and Hostage Taker. Adaptation is strictly better Conspiracy which was previously unplayable due to high CMC. At 2U it's fantastic since even your general is a Zombie now and can be cast with Rooftop Storm. Hostage Taker is a quite rare way to ged rid of problematic artifacts and even using them to your own advatage. Or you just steal their best creature. Its not a zombie, but hey, Arcane Adaptation, right? :)

I know it seems a little underwhelming, but have you considered Sedraxis Alchemist? It combos really nicely with Rooftop Storm to give you infinite casts in a turn, exploiting Diregraf Colossus and Altar of the Brood, and can help you bounce obnoxious enchantments in a pinch (Rest in Peace and Leyline of the Void come to mind). With the amount of counter magic you're running it could be a pretty reliable enchantment removal tool. Plus, if it happens to wind up in your graveyard you can hit it with The Scarab God at instant speed.

Hey guys, back into magic after some devastating events in my private life.

Or playgroup starts growing and I could test the deck (min differs only slightly) some more matches.

Let me say one thing: The deck is feared at the table. The only strategy one guys could stop me with is stealing permanents - DAMN HIM!!

But nevertheless: I took Undead Alchemist out of the deck even though I made 25 tokens with him. But I really dislike that my wincon switches to Death my Mill for as long as I can't remove him. Haven't really decided on the open position, I think I'll go with Damnation

Since you're already running Mindcrank and also have Training Grounds, why not run Duskmantle Guildmage? Short of an instant response by your opponent, activation of his first ability is an auto-kill with Mindcrank on the board when an opponent discards, takes damage/loses life or has a card hit the graveyard for any reason. Activate in response to them casting a spell and they are in jeopardy of dying immediately. CMC of the combo is very low, the activation doesn't require tapping, and at worst it absolutely draws out your opponents available responses, or they are dead...

Like how you've broken down the commander and taken advantage of its different aspects for the sake of versatility. Here's my thoughts, feel entirely free to disregard them:

Since you're playing black, how do you feel about adding some discard like e.g. Siren of the Silent Song (Inspired zombie with built-in evasion and a little bit of everything), (Liliana's Reaver) (deathtouch on block, extra token without block) and/or (Cabal Interrogator( (some synergy with Training Grounds but I dunno if it's worth it with multiple opponents)? (And obviously Waste Not if you do end up getting a lot.) Or are the million(five) counterspells already enough?

(Speaking of counterspells: Sorry if I'm missing something obvious here but wouldn't the all-powerful Mana Drain be worth including, especially with its recent reprint in Iconic Masters which will hopefully make it slightly less expensive? (((Also, the slightly greater color reliability of Negate feels better than the slight damage from Countersquall, but that's just me being extra picky.))))

(Also possibly Curse of Disturbance as a weird Grave Titan variant that other people can trigger for you.)

That's all, keep it up

Hey Coward_Token, maybe I can say something to the "mill" Stuff: I played lots of game and run quite the milling operation. A Few games I even made 2/3 of 4 guys decks into the GY. If you play with friends and you want to keep it that way I wouldnt hit the mill road too hard. I get tons of hate for Dreamborn Muse and with 4 guys you cant take that much advantage of the shitload of milled cards - so everybody is just pissed. As for Curse of Disturbance I really dislike it because it doenst give me full advantage. In my deck I run Liliana's Reaver and he performs quite nice!

I've read through your deck and I like it a lot. I have to question though, why did you pull out Crypt Ghast? He generates TONS of mana, and he obviously combos with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth.

The combo itself allows your Island to give you . Urborg turns all of your Islands into Swamps, which allows them to trigger Crypt Ghast. When you tap them for Crypt Ghast triggers giving you a as well. With Training Grounds on the board, each Island you tap gives you an activation of The Scarab God. Without Training Grounds, you can still tap 1 Island and 1 Swamp for the full activation cost.

Expedition Map is usually my go to method of tutoring it out. Any Land tutor that doesn't have the restriction of "Basic" works though.

Arcane Adaptation and Conspiracy both turn it into a Zombie. If you Mill it, or it dies, you always have your reanimation from The Scarab God which turns it into a Zombie as well. Buried Alive into Scarab reanimation is a good early game play.
