Trinisphere —Nov. 29, 2014

Finally came to a decision on Trinisphere. Since this deck actually can be run in legacy with a reasonable amount of success, I am using this update to show just how to modify the deck to get it ready for legacy tournaments.

Main Board Swaps:
Aether Spellbomb + Sunbeam Spellbomb --> 2xTrinisphere.
4xSerum Visions --> 4xPonder.
Auriok Salvagers + Pyrite Spellbomb + Conjurer's Bauble --> 3xBrainstorm.
3xFabricate --> 3xEnlightened Tutor

And that's it. Other than revamping the cantrips and fetch cards there isn't a card in this deck I would drop for legacy (Trinisphere change aside).

The real question is: Why?
Well, most legacy decks rely either on cheap cantrips or very efficient use of mana to pull of combos... heck, most of them just rely on extremely efficient mana use, like burn and affinity do. The few exceptions to this rule include such decks as Sneak and Show, Tron, and Pod decks (which can be handled with Meddling Mage and Pithing Needle), but almost every other deck will receive a massive amount of hate from Trinisphere. On top of that, Trinisphere completely stomps on the most common combo decks in legacy: Reanimator, Dredge (especially the manaless variant), Storm, Elves, and Infect. Yes the Trinisphere hurts my cantrips too, but by turn four I should be able to play around the card quite nicely, considering all of the cantriping this deck should be doing is already done by turn 3, and such cards as Dig Through Time and Pili-Pala already cost two to play, so they don't get hurt too much. Almost every other card in the deck costs 3 to play anyway, and the deck wins by making infinite mana, so a tax isn't the biggest deal. The spellbombs are dropped because... well there actually isn't anything else which the deck can afford to lose.

As to the cantrip changes, it's just a simple matter of using the best cantrips available, and Ponder easily outclasses Serum Visions, as well as Brainstorm outclassing... well the entire Bomberman win-con, rather unfortunately.

With these changes, the legacy version of the deck averages a turn four win, but usually manages to win by turn five, which is a turn faster than the modern version. Cantrip quality really does make a difference kids!

Overhauls are coming. I like the deck, and I own every card in it. In terms of playstyle it is me in a nutshell. But as for competitive effectiveness, I feel that some of the pillow fort cards get in the way of this deck's consistency. Therefore, I will make a copy of this deck and post it in the updates section to immortalize this version, but overhauls are coming soon. More cantrips, maybe dig through time, and switching my mana base to run on fetch lands and basics so that Blood Moon, Ghost Quarter, etc aren't such massive issues for the deck as they currently are. I may cut back a bit on lands too. With so much draw power, the last thing I want to do is flood out, which does occasionally happen with this deck.

I would like to point out that there is a legacy version of this deck that uses LED and the red spell bomb with the salvagers for infinite damage. The nickname of the deck is bomberman, so maybe check out a list and see if you can modify it for modern. This list feels like it is trying to do to much with minimal effectiveness. Maybe find a better infinite mana source? I'm not sure how you can untap pili when it is attacking. you can only use the ability when it untaps. Try using Mox Opal or maybe Springleaf Drum. I do like your idea. its something different.

The untap ability on Pili-Pala can be used to untap it whenever it becomes tapped. You do not need a source to untap it for you. I'm also aware of bomberman, I have even linked the deck list both in the description and in the update section. I do agree that the deck feels like it is trying to do a bit too much, and thus loses both consistency and effectiveness, however, there are a great enough number of "fetch" cards in the deck that I feel it is reasonably effective at doing what it tries to do. Granted, it could be more effective and consistent, but that is why I am in the process of overhauling it. As for Mox Opal and Springleaf Drum, this deck tends to run a fairly empty board prior to comboing, so I don't feel either card would produce mana reliably enough to make it worth running.

Comments where cleared and the deck underwent another major update. Check it out and let me know what you guys think of it in comparison to the old version. Personally I liked the old version more, but that was because its pillow fort nature made it inherently weaker to non-competitive decks, meaning such things as duel decks could hold their own against it simply for the massive amount of card diversity these decks run. Now this deck is too consistent and too fast for decks like that to stand a chance vs it, but the competitive strength of the new version is far greater. Again, let me know what you guys think, and thank you all for your support!

I stumbled across a card called Trinisphere and I really, really think it would be good in this deck, especially since this deck wins by going infinite on mana, and all of the hard fetch cards like Perplex and Fabricate already cost 3 anyways. I know that the Trinisphere could hurt the large # of cantrips in this deck, but I feel like it would hurt control, burn, and even a few combo and Aggro decks far more than it would hurt itself. What I can't decide is what to take out to add the Trinispheres. Should I remove the pseudo cantrip that is Mystic Speculation since it isn't a real draw engine and Trinisphere could hurt it anyway, or should I remove some other pillow fort card like Chalice of the Void or Pithing Needle instead?
Note: I am unwilling to remove Aura of Silence and Meddling Mage as they are my primary answers to Stony Silence.

My question is: what do you guys think I should remove? I'm currently leaning towards cutting Spellskite, since he tends to redirect only those cheap spells that Trinisphere already would be hurting. Also considering dumping Muddle the Mixture, but doing so would hurt the consistency with which I can get Meddling Mage, Spellskite, and Pili-Pala.

Thoughts?
