Making Mardu (1)

This deck hearkens back to a constructed deck I built during Innistrad. I wanted to capture the flavor of that set and fun I had playing "sacrifice for value" around the Falkenrath Aristocrat. Little did I know "Aristocrat" was or would become an Archetype.

I built the majority of this deck a couple of years before we got the perfect partner commanders and I really struggled to find the right commander at that time. I tried Mathas, Fiend Seeker and then settled on Queen Marchesa. I thought the Queen and the idea of the monarchy a bit cheesy but at least she was a human in the right colors that could get out and punch someone in the face. But I was so wrong. Queen Marchesa is great. The monarchy is a blast. No one else in my playgroup was running monarchy cards back then. In no time at all I had retired my "feed the humans to the vampires and demons" deck and rebuilt completely around the Queen. LMSR

And then Wizards goes and prints Silvar, Devourer of the Free. If you haven't noticed, Silvar is little more than a nerfed Falkenrath Aristocrat you may play as your commander. Oh, and he comes with dear little angel Trynn, Champion of Freedom. She pumps out monster food and at the same time they printed a bunch of other cards that make human tokens. Even adding the Human type to some Soldier tokens. HUGE for this deck!

So I dusted off the old boy, polished it up. This is a casual deck for a battle cruiser meta. The game plan is simply to make humans, smash face and if needed sacrifice humans to make attackers indestructible. I look to gain value from the death and ETB triggers in both efficient and less efficient ways. Cards like Village Cannibals and Ravenous Demon   aren't exactly format all-stars but they are fun cards in this deck and the flavor is on point.

So here it is, a grim town not so unlike yours or mine . . . where you will see the hunger and relish the flavor.

Sure, overall Midnight Hunt is kinda weak but for a deck built on the original Innistrad and powered up by Trynn + Silvar, there are plenty of new cards to consider for this deck. I cracked two set booster boxes and ended up with 11 cards I might want to run. Unfortunately I whiffed on The Meathook Massacre so I won't be adding that one today. Otherwise, definite auto include. I'll keep an eye on it in hopes the price comes down a bit. Either way, I am sure I'll land a copy for this deck eventually.

After thoughtful consideration there 8 cards I have decided to make room for. They are likely to power up the deck quite a bit, as I will replace the most under-powered cards I was running specifically to keep the deck very casual. I am also willing to cut SOME of my less powerful yet most flavorful cards. Sadly, I think the Ravenous Demon  Flip is going to go. It's either that or the Village Cannibals. The cannibals are probably worse, I mean they are pretty terrible. Oddly, they are a magnet for insta-removal though. Sure, Path my Cannibals and have no removal in hand when someones' Muldrotha or Korvold comes down. Way to go Opponent! But the Cannibals are the decks Signature card so they stay for now.

Out:

Doomed Traveler

Ravenous Demon (this one hurts)

Mangara the Diplomat (Flavor fail, tastier draw options in the new set)

Palace Jailer

Ambitions Cost (Boring)

Thatcher Revolt (I liked how this meh card was actually pretty good here but I had to cut a bunch of stuff)

Red Elemental Blast (Catches people by surprise but my play group has seen it and expects my tricks)

Garrison Cat (I’ll miss this good kitty but not because it was winning me any games)

Boros Signet (Cause I pulled a Herald’s Horn off the list)

Swamp (for Bojuka Bog)

In:

Adeline, Resplendent Cathar (Seems good)

Graveyard Trespasser (Let’s hate on some yards)

Morbid Opportunist (This should draw a lot of cards in this deck)

Brutal Cathar (Going to do more work than Palace Jailer and tastes better than chicken)

Mask of Griselbrand (Silvar will wear this well)

Reckless Stormseeker (Not sure about this one but I’ll give it a go. Makes Silvar a better Falkenrath Aristocrat)

Rem Karolus (I’ll give it a shot cause it might be good but a bit of a flavor fail)

Intrepid Adversary (I don’t run many anthems ‘cause I feed my peeps to the monsters but . . .)

Herald’s Horn (This was in my plans, I just didn’t have an extra one; ‘til now)

Bojuka Bog (Not sure why this wasn’t in here. I have always had terrible luck with it but one day I’ll draw it at an appropriate time)
