Points: Ancestral Recall (7) Mystical Tutor (2) Dig Through Time (1)

At the moment UW control might be one of the scariest deck that lurks in tournaments. Just try to think what it doesn't have.

  • It has answers to any permanent type and it has ability to dig to everything while stalling with excellent cards.
  • You trying to out value it? Mystic Sanctuary + Deprive/Tragic Lesson/Cryptic Command will make that hard.
  • Dangerous threats that can end the game alone and some of them are instant speed
  • Uses its lands like spells extremely well (arguable only dedicated lands decks use them better) 3 Cycling, 1 Recursion, 2 Manlands 2 LD 3 Removal (4 if you count Maze as removal land) 2 Castle. UW also has the ability to return them to hand if needed without any convoluted cards
  • THE best control walkers that any control deck would play
  • UW does all of this so constantly with different cards that sometimes it feels like you are playing 60 card format (Mainly because you mostly counter and remove stuff)
  • And the biggest reason is so I can play Waker of Waves and say that it is a good control card. But seriously I have casted Waker of Waves or Mirrorshell Crab multiple times against different archetypes.

Even though in my opinion UW is one of the best deck it still has some flaws

  • The early game is everything and UW doesn't like T1 mana dorks and hates mox starts if your opponent is starting. Even with good hands aggro deck with fast mana can bee too much
  • Aggro/tempo is the only archetype that UW can struggle against especially R/RG decks because they present the highest damage in early game and surprisingly that is when UW is its weakest. Tempo decks usually take longer to kill you so you have more time to get your shit together but they can have stupidly fast starts
  • Having so many utility lands that Blood Moon and Back to Basics effects are actually good against this deck (And that's why this list doesn't play Back to Basic
  • Playing UW is hard for mentally and physically especially in tournament environment with 3-5 rounds. It is known that control decks are hard to pilot and that correlates with exhaustion
  • Having to listen opponents bitch about control decks

For my final words I am going to say that UW is the best variant of traditional UWx control decks. Only Jeskai has meaningful additions with its burn that gives more reach but your threats are so good that you almost never need that reach. Bant and Esper are just straight downgrades because G and B cards just make the mana base and deck more inconsistent with little upside.

BUT

If you enjoy those 3c variants don't let me stop you. This is my opinion because I like to play my decks as optimized as possible if I love the deck, and yes I think that it is actually viable to play pet cards like Waker of Waves because it makes the deck more fun and surprise factors can win games.

Thanks for reading my 2 cents and have a good controlled time.
