Maybeboard

Big shoutout to the homie, wolfsack, for coming up with the deck's name.

The Bre'st way to die? Getting thrown or stepped on by a kindly giant woman. We are all normal about this.

They done it again. WotC created another 4 mana R/W legend (previously Osgir, the Reconstructorfoil and Nelly Borca, Impulsive Accuserfoil) that piqued my interest. More than that, Bre builds on the familiar design space carved out by her dad, Brion Stoutarm, and creates new space for an intersection of lifegain, exile play payoffs, aggro, and just enough wiggle room for a pinch of related alternate win-cons.

Unlike her dad, Bre isn't as concerned with throwing things around, making sure the creatures she throws around mostly land safely. Although Bre can grant another creature flying and lifelink, this deck will focus more on utilizing creatures that mostly already have built in lifelink to make the most of her end of turn impulse plays.

Since I play in a fairly Aggro heavy meta, playing a very lifegain focused deck is a "counter" to that meta, as opposed to the typical fighting fire with fire approach. My group prefers to lean into aggro by either being the fastest, hardest hitting, or most Goad-inducing deck at the table.

For now, I intend this deck to sit around Bracket 3 - Bracket 4. Given the Bracket criteria, I'm leaning more towards 4 since Bracket 3 decks shouldn't have 2 Card Combos that can occur before turn 6, and the Walking Ballista + Heliod, Sun-Crowned combo is possible before then.

Alright, I'll address the 4/4 Giant Warrior woman in the room - this deck is expensive as currently listed. Most of this deck is stuff I own in paper, and the rest will likely be proxied up since my main playgroup is cool with proxies. It goes without saying that most players don't have an extensive collection to draw from (heh), or may not have a playgroup that is open to proxying cards, let alone full decks.

This section is for suggestions on budget alternatives, as well as different subthemes to lean into if you want to put your own twist on this. The subtheme suggestions are basically an extension of the budget alternatives.

Many of the cards in this deck are fairly expensive at $5 and well beyond that. I won't go through them all with 1:1 suggestions on swaps, but figured I'd highlight a few potential swaps for consideration. Since this section isn't exhaustive, I also recommend you check out this deck's Maybe Board, which has a pretty extensive collection for consideration.

  1. Esper Sentinel / Ocelot Pride / or Serra Ascendant - The deck is not dependent on any of these 3 to do what it needs to do. These are all prime budget alternative slots as needed.

  2. Balefire Liege or Nykthos Paragon over Archangel of Thune - The Archangel is a powerful card for a strat like this. Although the Liege's P/T boost has a lower ceiling than the Archangel, it is a less Kill on Sight™️ card. Getting a Lightning Helix effect for playing spells is pretty not bad. Nykthos Paragon is a bit closer to the Archangel's capabailities in terms of buffing up your board.

  3. Rhox Faithmender over Aetherflux Reservoir / The Wind Crystal / Smothering Tithe / or Alhammarret's Archive - Take your pick of any of these expensive 4-5 drops and swap them for this kindly Rhino guy that also doubles up your lifegain.

  4. Aerith Gainsborough over Heliod, Sun-Crowned or any other expensive 3 drop of your choice - Aerith is but one example of a potential swap for a 3 drop slot. Heliod is solid as a standalone piece outside of his combo.

  5. Prism Ring / Profane Memento / or Mazemind Tome over Walking Ballista - Speaking of combos, there are many different artifacts that could take Walking Ballista's slot. These are but a small selection of alternatives, unless you would prefer to dedicate this slot to more removal, ramp, or another life gain effect.

  6. Felidar Sovereign and Test of Endurance could be alt wincon swaps for any of the more expensive alt wincons currently in the deck.

Bre can grant creatures lifelink in addition to whatever other lifelink anthem effects I hope you're running in this deck. Why not grant lifelink to Spite effects? Some options to consider:

If you're going to be gaining life in a manner that other decks around the table aren't able to, why not introduce some burn damage that hits everyone.

For this section I really wanted to lean into creatures and Auras that could gain silly amounts of life if given lifelink by Bre or any other effect in deck:

Since Lifegain decks are usually built to play the long game and hunker down to outlast the table, they will sometimes make use of alt wincons that build off of that pacing and resource investment.

  • Aetherflux Reservoir - I haven't had the chance to fire up the laser in a game yet. I'd like to cross this off my EDH bucket list at least once. I'll keep this in the deck on initial deck testing, but this could be a potential slot for another dedicated removal piece.

  • Angel of Destiny - I don't think I've been the losing end of an Angel of Destiny yet, but I've played against one in a few games. Having a clone effect in the deck like Gogo, Mysterious Mime opens up some additional means of knocking out multiple players at once. Roaming Throne could be a cheesy inclusion, since the deck has a minor contingent of Angels.

  • Heliod, Sun-Crowned + Walking Ballista - A solid combo for lifegain strats. This combo is fairly decent. Walking Ballista needs some additional support, whereas Heliod can be a standalone value piece. Walking Ballista can benefit from cards like Nykthos Paragon, but ideally will be part of the combo with Heliod.

  • Archangel of Thune + Walking Ballista - This is another possible combo to similar effect as the one with Heliod. All the Ballista needs is at least 2 +1/+1 counters and some means of having Lifelink for the Archangel to stack counters on it. Easy peasy.

Additional Combo possibilities

The deck's average CMC as of 1/18/26 is sitting around 2.7. I tend to play around 4-6 Ramp effects that can be played in the first three turns to help get things off the ground a bit faster. I think of "mana acceleration" effects as ones that help a deck keep the pedal to the metal once it is beyond turn 3 and stay ahead of its curve.

Catch Up Effects

I figured it was distinguishing these effects as ones that help to regain lost ground, rather than accelerating ahead. It's not uncommon to play against at least one Green deck that ramps ahead of what most non-Green decks are capable of.

  • Land Tax - Land Tax helps to ensure that we hit all of our land drops and stay on curve or better. A potential bonus is to thin out the deck of Lands to help Bre more consistently hit spells, and reduce the number of lands that end up in exile.

  • Battle Angesl of Tyr

Cost Reducers

  • Pearl Medallion - This and Ruby Medallion are in this in-between zone of being ramp in the early game, but can help with increasing play actions throughout a game. Although typical mana rocks can accelerate possible plays by tapping for additional mana, the cost reduction across multiple spells quickly adds up.

  • Ruby Medallion

  • The Wind Crystal

Early Ramp

Mana Acceleration (Treasure)

If you don't have access to Green ramp then you should make use of all the ramp and mana acceleration you can get.

  • Descent into Avernus - Ideally the life gain in this deck should help break parity with the damage effect. Descent into Avernus is also just a fun card that helps add some more juice into games. I can't think of a game I've played where anyone was ever upset at this card, and instead leaned into the chaos of it.

  • Professional Face-Breaker - Easily one of my favorite cards of the past few years. Always reward yourself for punching faces. Always.

The more I've thought about Bre of Clan Stoutarm's end step impulse draw, I've wondered is she just the Boros Prosper, Tome-Boundfoil? (I kinda miss playing Prosper. I wish he hadn't ended up as hyped as he did.) Maybe Bre will end up scratching some of that Prosper itch for me.

As cool as it is too have some impulse free play in the command zone, I wanted to make ensure that the deck had plenty of draw support to hand with a mix of exile draw to synergize with some of the "Exile Play matters" pay offs.

Draw

Any effects that draw cards to hand or "put" cards in hand. This section will include cantrip effects as well.

  • War Roomfoil - Paying for life seems much more trivial now lol.

  • Esper Sentinel

  • Cathartic Pyre - I like the modal flexibility available here, but I think reps with the deck will help me determine if I want this slot to be more dedicated to draw or removal.

  • Loran of the Third Path - I have a slightly similar sentiment for Loran's slot as Cathartic Pyre, but do enjoy the political element. I've considered Wedding Ring as a potential swap for one of these two cards, especially as a counter/leech to other life gain focused decks.

  • The Gaffer

  • Valakut Awakening

  • Battle Angels of Tyr - More of a catch up card that helps lay offensive pressure in the air.

  • Exemplar of Light

  • Alhammarret's Archive - Not a draw effect on its own, but helps plant a foot firmly on the gas in conjunction with some of the other cards above.

  • Aurelia, the Law Above - I've really enjoyed Aurelia in my Isshin and Nelly Borca decks. I love that she triggers off any player attacking, so I don't have to commit to compromising aggro plays to benefit from her draw.

Exile Draw

  • Jeska's Will - It's a Game Changer. It's bretty gud.

  • Laelia, the Blade Reforged - An aggro threat that enables her own growth and benefits from Bre's endstep trigger. She's a great target for Bre's tap ability.

  • Professional Face-Breaker - Hands down one of my favorite cards of the past few years. Its inclusion always goes something like, "Am I playing aggro? Does it have Red? Yes, I would like to benefit from smacking faces."

  • Valakut Exploration

Top Deck setup

I debated putting these two cards in the non-exile draw category. Both cards are certainly adjacent to those effects but have their additional setup utility. I may revisit adding more Scry effects in the deck to help bolster this section.

Removal

Any means of removing other permanents via destruction or exile.

Interaction

To me, this is a bit of a catch all for control effects that slow down my opponents, prevent them from utilizing their resources as intended, or ping them directly for damage.

Protection

My catch all for effects that directly protect my board, redirect attention, or prevent my opponents

As cool as it is that Bre can give a creature Flying and Lifelink, I think this deck will be at its best when utilizing dedicated life gain focused effects. Ideally, the majority of life gain should come from the 99, and Bre should only use her activated ability to give evasion to a hefty aggro threat.

Lifelinkers

Passive/Incidental Life Gain

  • Inventors' Fair - The deck ended up being a bit more artifact heavy than I anticipated, so I figured it could be worth trying out.
  • Authority of the Consuls - Authority of the Consuls is kind of a Soul Sister if you think about it. Almost. Like a Soul Sister with the upside of not being a creature, and speed bumping opposing boards.
  • Curious Farm Animals - A one time gain of 3 life upon death is nothing to scoff at for this deck, given that 44/64 spells in the deck are 3 cmc or lower (as of 1/16/26).
  • Guide of Souls - TBD on how frequently I'll be able to use Guide's effect to grant flying and +1/+1 counters in a deck that isn't focused on Energy.
  • Soul's Attendant
  • Auriok Champion - This, Soul's Attendant, Guide of Souls, and Authority of the Consuls are the only Soul Sister effects currently in the deck. I think to make the most of Bre's effect, Soul Sister effects shouldn't be the primary means of gaining life, but are still helpful for triggering life gain payoffs more frequently.
  • Blind Obedience - Extort is a great way to get ~3 or so life, give or take, per activation while draining the table.
  • Charismatic Conqueror - Although the tokens it creates have lifelink, opponents will likely opt to avoid creating any.
  • Heliod, Sun-Crowned - I consider this to be incidental since Heliod has to be activated to give another another creature lifelink.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir - Although Reservoir has an incidental life gain effect, I don't see myself or my opponents letting this sit around for long. Realistically, I think I would only drop this when I have enough life to activate it at least once.
  • Battle Angels of Tyr - I consider this to more of an incidental effect since The Battle Angels are more of a catch up effect. Ideally I'll be the player with the most life, but that may not always be the case.
  • Serra Paragon

Life Gain-harmonicons

Life Gain Pay Offs

Bre shouldn't be the only card that benefits from all your life gain.

Apparently Bre likes to take naps according to the Lorwyn Eclipsed lore. Flavor wise, Bre's exile free casting is likely her dreaming in some sunny pasture. This deck only has a few Exile play payoffs, but they're each potent enough that only one is needed at a time. More playing will determine if the deck needs any additional exile payoffs.

Having combo and Alt wincon options is cool and all, but I still enjoy turning creatures sideways when possible. Bre's activated ability grants a creature Flying, indicating that she wants some degree of evasive aggro threats (this is still Boros after all).

Anthems

This is my catchall for cards that grant keywords and modify power/toughness via a static buff or +1/+1 counters.

Odric, Lunarch Marshal is a key piece for pushing through aggro damage, mostly for the smaller bodies in the 1-3 cmc range.

Deathtouch: 1

Double Strike: 1

First Strike: 3

Flying: 11

Counting Bre's ability, this could be rounded up to 12.

Haste: 6

Indestructible: 2

Lifelink: 10

  • Basilisk Collar
  • Ocelot Pride
  • Serra Ascendant
  • Shadowspear - Counting this since it grants keywords to the equipped creature.
  • Charismatic Conqueror - Mostly counting the tokens it creates with lifelink.
  • Caduceus, Staff of Hermes - Pending being equipped.
  • Heliod, Sun-Crowned - Similar to the Conqueror and Shadowspear, I'm counting Heliod here since he could give a creature lifelink prior to combat.
  • Lightning, Army of One
  • Archangel of Thune
  • Celestine, the Living Saint

Menace: 1

Trample: 2

  • Shadowspear
  • Lightning, Army of One

Vigilance: 3
