The Banner of the Black Rose

Commander / EDH Pirate Tokens UBR (Grixis)

"What is dead may never die."
-Game of Thrones, House Greyjoy Motto

Pirate-Queen Marchesa leads her fleet in the pursuit of treasure tokens, building toward a win via either Mechanized Production or Revel in Riches . While it is fun to get a cheeky, gold-plated win, this deck has ample aggression to overwhelm opponents with combat power alone. Many of our creatures bring a chest of gold with them, but those that don't play into the combat in one way or another.

Marchesa, while not being the cornerstone of the deck, has an ability that allows us to attack our opponents in waves, ensuring that whoever is in the lead (life-total wise) does not get too far ahead with little risk to our crew, who will rise from the depths once more. Many will even bring another heap of treasure with them, furthering our ultimate goal.

If we have no luck sticking one of our "peaceful" win-cons, our crew has more than enough strength to overwhelm our opponents the old-fashioned way.

Quartermaster Vela the Night-Clad assists our three-colored crew by ensuring that some pirates can deal direct damage, depending on your opponents' creature presence.

Noteable combat-aggressors:
Dire Fleet Neckbreaker
Dire Fleet Poisoner
Fathom Fleet Swordjack
Gadrak, the Crown-Scourge
Warkite Marauder
Zara, Renegade Recruiter

Additional Non-combat Damage:
Lightning-Rig Crew
Flayer of the Hatebound
Vela the Night-Clad
Warstorm Surge

Marchesa's ability returns creatures to the battlefield under your control at the next end step. This means if you have temporary control of a creature, such as through Captivating Crew , Coercive Recruiter , or Zara, Renegade Recruiter , and it gains a counter through Dethrone or Unspeakable Symbol , if it dies before the turn is over ( Ruthless Knave ) Marchesa brings it back under your control, permanently.

Unspeakable Symbol is for more than just keeping counters on our creatures; it's also useful for keeping our life total low to get the most from Dethrone.

The little bit of direct damage from Lightning-Rig Crew can produce treasures and draw you cards alongside Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator and Tandem Lookout , respectively.

This is still a work in progress, so any helpful suggestions are appreciated!
