Maybeboard

By now this is the deck that has changed the most since I've had it. At first it was like a Spider Tribal deck, but Spider creatures don't have any synergy with each other (with the exception of Ishkanah, Grafwidow) so that meant I had to supplement that synergy with different cards like Steely Resolve and Kindred Summons, but that didn't really work out well.

What did work from this stage were the fogs. With everyone being forced to attack, using fog effects in this deck seemed like a very good idea and it still is. I just don't want to turn it into a true turbofog deck, because that would seem too one-note and boring. Nevertheless, one cornerstone of this deck are the fogs and will probably stay that way. Some notable fogs are: - Constant Mists - Arachnogenesis - Obscuring Haze

After the whole Spider theme failed, I broadend this by theming the deck with a blighted woodlands feel. Like you walked into a tainted forest where Thantis lives and you have to fight all the critters under her control. So I started adding creatures that would synergize well with Thantis' ability to force every creature to attack. Hornet Queen seems perfect, with the deathtouchers she creates. Predator Ooze also really seems to fit, as well as Slumbering Dragon.

From this point on I really started to focus more on synergizing with Thantis' forced combat ability. Deathreap Ritual, for example, fits really well in a game where lots of creatures die because they are forced to attack into one another. Mass Hysteria is a prime example as well. Giving all your opponents creatures haste so they are forced to attack the turn they are played? Yes, sign me up. This is also when I found out about the "hunted" cards, which seem like a perfect fit. Hunted Troll and Hunted Horror both give your opponent creatures they can attack you or your opponents with, so fun all around!

So what's next? Well, I started leaning deeper into Thantis herself. She is after all another cornerstone of this deck. Her ability is what the deck revolves around, so naturally I want her on the board as much as possible, so I started looking at ways to protect her. Asceticism, Alpha Authority and Canopy Cover are added, the latter two also giving Thantis some nice evasion. So I don't want to turn this into a voltron deck, but it does have a bit of that voltron-y style. Other enchantments like Goblin War Drums or Primal Rage give her a keyword without the fear of the enchantment getting blown up alongside Thantis.

So the first two cornerstones are Thantis herself as an almost Voltron-y style commander, and the fogs that emulate a turbofog deck, but not quite. The third cornerstone is that of tokens and especially that of incidental or repeatable token creation. So Artifact Mutation is a great example of artifact removal that incidentally also creates creature tokens for you. Something like Night Soil is repeatable token creation with the benefit of graveyard hate and Predatory Advantage just keeps churning out tokens if your opponents refuse to play creatures (which, lets be honest, they might be inclined to do if they know their creature won't even survive combat).

Now, as you've probably seen already, this deck has a massive Maybeboard. This is partially because, as described above, this deck went through several changes and every card I got for those previous itterations can be found in the maybeboard (except for the Spiders and other tribal cards). Themes you might find in here are whither and infect. I especially like the infect theme for this deck, as I run Triumph of the Hordes as a finisher, but you could, say, switch out the fog-theme for an infect theme, adding in Decimator Web (mostly because the "web" aspect adds flavour with Thantis), Blightwidow and Carrion Call for example. If you lean heavier into the -1/-1 counters theme, you could also add Nest of Scarabs and Blowfly Infestation, all still really in the Blighted Woodlands theme.

So, a couple of closing words: Lifegift is an amazing and quite underrated card. Especially in the Thantis deck where attacks are much more likely to happen, having a cheap and repeatable source of lifegain is amazing. Leyline of Vitality also works for this. My decks always include at least one card that grants the Monarch, which is Regal Behemoth in this deck, but you could also add Marchesa's Decree if you want to go the more pillowfort-y route (Revenge of Ravens also fits nicely in that category) and/or even Thorn of the Black Rose if you want a deathtoucher.

I hope this decklist can serve as a basis for any of your Thantis decks. There are lots of themes to lean into; turbofog, voltron, forced combat, tokens, infect/wither, big beaters and/or pillowfort-drain. Pick one or two you like and see which Mayboard cards fit your personal deck.

Any suggestions are of course very much welcome!
