Maybeboard

This deck is a work in progress.

If you like mono-blue, tempo, stax, and artifacts, this deck is for you. If you don't, this isn't.

The deck with the closest plan to ours I could find was Urza, Lord High Artificier. Urza, Lord High Artificier is an infinite mana outlet, turns utility artifacts into mana to break parity, and has insane synergy with Static Orb and Winter Orb. The only advantage Thada Adel, the Acquisitor has is the ability to find stax and combo pieces.

Pros of Thada Adel, the Acquisitor:

  • Her combos are compact, allowing you to pack more interaction.
  • She provides access to ramp, which reduces the effect of not playing green.
  • She lets you tutor for stax and hate pieces, which reduces the effect of not playing black.
  • She's blue, so you've access to the good card draw and answers.

Cons of Thada Adel, the Acquisitor:

With infinite mana, draw your library with Stroke of Genius, Pull from Tomorrow, or Blue Sun's Zenith. When using Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal, you can also Sensei's Divining Top.

You can mill your opponents with Codex Shredder + Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal, or draw them out with Stroke of Genius or Blue Sun's Zenith. You can also use Copy Artifact + Swan Song with Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal for infinite swans.

This deck will either play as tempo, stax, or something in between. You'd like to keep your commander on the board, as she accrues a significant amount of value by ramping, grabbing silver bullets, and depriving your opponents of opportunities to do likewise.

Against fast combo, you'll prioritize stax effects to shut them down, prioritizing whatever hates out the fastest deck in your pod. Play slower to hold up interaction.

Against midrange decks, you need to be more careful. Midrange decks have more ways to remove your commander, who isn't necessary to your gameplan, but is certainly helpful. This is also the archetype you'll see the most artifact hate in, which shuts us down hard. Be prepared for it with removal and counterspells.

Playing with other stax decks is normally pretty nice. You'll be able to focus on grabbing mana rocks to deal with resource denial effects, and most stax decks rely on artifacts as well, so you won't have to deal with as much hate. One notable exception is Urza, Lord High Artificier, who is more than happy to drop a Null Rod once Urza, Lord High Artificer hits the table.

As a commander, Thada Adel, Acquisitor is heavily meta dependant. Fortunately, the meta in cEDH consists of a lot of blue, so you'll rarely have trouble connecting. Even in the rare games where you're the only blue deck, you should be able to hit at least one player.

Your main targets with Thada Adel, Acquisitor are Isochron Scepter, Grim Monolith, Basalt Monolith, an infinite mana outlet, or a stax piece.

You'll typically start by grabbing a stax piece if available, depending on your meta. However, if there aren't any available or the piece will stop your gameplan, you can resort to a mana rock. If you can combo off, and believe that you have enough protection, obviously do so.
