New from War of the Spark

Roalesk, Apex Hybrid . Planning to pick up 2 of these in place of two Climbs. 4/5 flying trample for 5 with an extra two +1/+1 counters that pumps our team and planeswalkers when it dies? Yes please. Hits on all fronts here.

Tamiyo, Collector of Tales works well against Thought Erasure and Liliana's Triumph .

Vivien, Champion of the Wilds lets us end of turn Krasis or Roalesk, and is another Vivien who searches up creatures.

Paradise Druid has me considering it over Llanowar Elves since it pumps Pelt Collector and taps for UR as well as G. Would probably have to reorganize the 2-drop slot if I intended to do this though. Might do this anyway since 7/11 of the 2-drop slot is reactive or partially reactive.

Highlights

Temur Midrange is a very underrated brew this format. Our goal with this deck is to go both wide and tall with 28 creature spells that get very big very quickly. RUG gives you access to some very powerful options:

  • Hydroid Krasis one of the best creature spells around.
  • Lava Coil premium 2 mana removal that exiles its target. Worth the sorcery speed for how much it answers.
  • Kraul Harpooner a creature which can smite everything from a lowly un-adapted Pteromander, to Esper's Thief of Sanity to Niv-Mizzet, Parun himself.
  • Negate and Disdainful Stroke These are probably the best sideboard cards in the format against control and reclamation, except for maybe the next card.
  • Cindervines This lovely little enchantment straight up carries games 2 and 3 against reclamation and does decent work against esper, gates, and mono-blue.

My feeling of matchups so far is that:

  • Esper, Mono-blue: about 45/55 for the other team. Post-sideboard things get a lot better for us, but game 1 is rough.
  • Gruul: Pretty even matchup here which seems to fall to the draws a lot of the time.
  • Reclamation/Gates: We are heavily favoured here. Our sideboard deals so well with them.
  • Sultai Midrange: Sultai is pretty heavily favoured. I'm looking for possible sideboard options to maybe siphon some of my Reclamation/Gates win-rate into evening up this matchup.
  • Mono-red/Drakes: We are heavily favoured here. They have a lot of trouble sticking creatures.
  • Mono-white: Very tough here since we eschew Wildgrowth Walker and Merfolk Branchwalker . The deck can't achieve the board saturation to counter mono-white's nonsense. Fiery Cannonade is absolutely crucial here.
